Healing - The science and art of transformation
by Anisha Anilraj
In the cover story on Emotional freedom Techniques(EFT), in the July issue of Life Positive, the author had mentioned that with the quickening tempo of everyday life, healing was also becoming quicker and had hazarded a guess that the time would come when healing would be instantaneous and would simply spring from an intention. The time apparently has already come and the technique in question is Matrix Energetics, which has established itself at remarkable speed worldwide since its inception in the late nineties. This new system promises to revolutionise energy medicine with its numerous techniques, predominantly based on the principles of quantum physics. Matrix Energetics hopes to reach out to the masses not so much as a source of healing, but as ‘a science and art of transformation.’
A serendipitous beginning
Matrix Energetics (ME) was founded by Dr Richard Bartlett, a Seattle-based chiropractor and doctor of naturopathic medicine. Dr Bartlett discovered his extraordinary capacity to heal while working with a three-year-old girl diagnosed with a lazy eye (amblyopic). While disorders of the visual system are uncommon in a chiropractor’s line of work, Dr Bartlett had at that time a reputation in his community for practising ‘weird medicine.’ He did not know how to cure this condition. However, Dr Bartlett wanted to alleviate the little girl’s visual disorder, and so accessed all the knowledge and skills he possessed, to figure out the best way to help her.
What follows is a fantastic tale of Dr Bartlett’s intuition, along with inspiration drawn from the fictional American hero, Superman, who lurked in Dr Bartlett’s subconscious mind. The interplay of these faculties helped him sense that the child had an energy blockage in her optic nerves. The way he tells this story, which is essentially the beginning of the phenomenon now named Matrix Energetics, is that he placed his right index finger on the girl’s brow and focused energy through it, with the intent of moving the blockage away. Minutes later the girl had been cured.
At this point Dr Bartlett was essentially a healer who had stumbled upon an energy, which he could channel through patients. Instantly recognising the potential of his discovery, he was eager to share it with others. Soon after he started teaching this form to others, he realised that most people’s minds need a basis to understand what he was doing to help them. Thus began his research to understand what this phenomenon really was, so that he could explain it better. He found his answers in the field of quantum physics, a science reputed at being most elusive, especially to those who seek to understand it.
After extensive research, Dr Bartlett concluded that he had discovered a ‘consciousness technology’ and named the phenomenon ‘Matrix Energetics.’ Thisnew paradigm bears its roots in the principles of quantum physics, and is a technique of bringing about self-transformation by creating awareness of alternative realities.
Physics and perspectives
The world we experience with our five senses can be sufficiently explained by classical physics, using Newton’s laws. Matter, which we can see, touch, and feel, can be explained in relation to space, time, and forces being exerted upon it. While we are aware that the physical objects surrounding us everyday are made of smaller particles, we find it easier to relate to them as whole entities. I distinctly remember back in school, when we first set out to learn physics, my teacher tapped her desk and told us that, “This desk is made of wood, which is solid matter. All matter is comprised of smaller particles called atoms and atoms are in a state of constant motion.” I remember wondering, if what built this wooden desk was in constant motion, how was it that the desk was solid with a distinct, measureable shape? Surely, the desk should also be vibrating like the molecules that made it what it was. I later learned that while classical physics considers matter infinitely divisible, the constant state of motion of these little particles averaged out in the end. Hence, all the vibrating atoms of my teacher’s desk were cancelling each other out, and thus the desk stood solidly and wooden before us. Thus, classical physics is more tangible to us. It is the reality of the world we live in, and share with each other.
On the other hand, quantum physics works on an atomic and sub-atomic level. It is based on the quantum theory, which speaks about the fundamental nature of the universe. The quantum theory states that at the most elemental level, everything is made of energy. This energy is not continuous but comes in small discrete units, which are capable of acting like both particles and waves. While this idea seems simple enough, it is, in fact, a paradox. Most of our physical world has objects that either demonstrate particle-like or wave-like tendencies. Simply put, a particle is a definite and tangible physical entity at a fixed location, while a wave is a possibility, an uncertainty, not definite in size nor location. However, in the realm of quantum physics, we have what is known as wave-particle duality. The best example of this is light, which is comprised of photons, which are essentially small packets of energy. What determines whether the photons of light are demonstrating wave-like or particle-like properties is the experimental set-up and your specific frame of reference. The observer can influence the observed, and therefore there really is nothing like the objective world of modern science. Any object can change depending on how you look at it, or in other words, it is all about perspective.
The science of transformation
While practising Matrix Energetics, one is urged to let go of this classical understanding of reality and observe it from a quantum perspective instead. Matrix Energetics tries to invoke awareness that in our regular world, we are caught in a duality of disease and healing. When we are unwell, we demonstrate certain symptoms for which treatment is prescribed. Dr Bartlett proposes that anything we do in reaction to a disease condition, adds more energy to that unwanted state. By treating the condition, we are giving it attention, thereby further validating its existence. Consequentially, we are attached to our ailment, which in turn becomes more aware of itself. Dr Bartlett explains that instead of accepting our reality and buying into duality such as the disease and treatment set, we should instead choose to experience the possibilities of an alternative reality, based on the flexibility allowed by quantum physics, instead of the rigidity of the classical model.
The human hologram
Dr Bartlett's perception of the human body is at its most basic – photons held together by consciousness. This perspective is shared by most practitioners of ME who view the person they are helping not as a physical being, but instead as a holographic pattern of photons bearing energy and information.
Abiding by the principles of quantum physics, when something is observed at the quantum level, the very act of observation changes it. Thus observed from a quantum perspective, one has leverage in bringing about transformation and theoretically, a disease can be intercepted or its outcome can be changed. Thus, the possibilities of healing at the quantum level are endless and what Matrix Energetics does is to teach you a new way to ‘see’ an alternative reality, thereby equipping you with the ability to transform yourself.
The state of causation
While practising the techniques of Matrix Energetics, an individual needs to follow a three-step process of ‘Drop down, Place intent, Let go’. By ‘Drop down’, it is implied that one enters an altered state of infinite possibilities, where the rules of our regular reality do not apply. ‘Placing Intent’ requires that we envision the change we wish to observe, and finally ‘Let go’ and submit to the will of the moment to allow the effect of our intent to play out. Thus, we are not dealing with a case of mind-over-matter; instead we are working with the mind as matter itself.
Tapping into the matrix
The most popular method of learning Matrix Energetics is by attending weekend seminars organised periodically in the United States, and a few other countries. To a non-participating observer, the seminars appear almost evangelical, with people often passing out on stage. However, irrespective of whether they master the technique or not, mostly people leave the seminars with a heightened sense of awareness and joy.
ME can also be learned via books written by Dr Bartlett and DVDs of his seminar sessions. Many individuals have mastered ME through these media resources.
This cardinal technique of Matrix Energetics is performed by ‘skimming’ the body for possible energy blockages. Once the practitioner finds a point that feels stuck, hard, or rigid, a second point is chosen from a different location. The rule for selecting the second point is that it makes the first area feel tenser than it did when measured by itself. While this measurement is arbitrary, Dr Bartlett also promotes using Jungian archetypes of transformation in making the selection of the two points. Now one needs to drop down and imagine the body at a quantum realm filled with photons and energy patterns, place one’s intent of the change you want to see, and finally let go to let the energy wave play itself out. While teaching this technique at his seminars, Dr Bartlett says, “Transformation occurs when you let go of the need for anything to happen.”
While being true to these principles, all Matrix practitioners have their own unique way of performing the Two-Point based simply on what feels right to them at that particular time, with that particular patient, under the given circumstances.
This technique is implemented in cases of emotional trauma and even illness. What is being achieved through this technique is a reversal of an unwanted state by revisiting a time before it happened and changing the wave patterns of consciousness. Since we are conducting these activities grounded in an alternative reality by viewing matters from a quantum perspective, photons can now move backwards and forwards in time.
Time travel is achieved by first establishing a two-point measurement on an individual. Using their current age as a starting point, the practitioner counts backwards in five-year increments. At a certain point of time, the two points start to soften thereby indicating that the correct age has been reached. The individuals often experience physical or emotional release of energy as they begin reprocessing their experiences. When returned to the present moment, the diseased or emotional state is erased, and this is achieved without reliving any of the traumas.
The most fantastic tales reported by ME practitioners using time travel have included the treatment of cancer, emotional trauma, and repairing broken bones, by moving back in time to a period before the occurrence of the event.
Quantum physics also includes a ‘Many Worlds’ theory. According to it, there exist parallel universes exactly like ours, which branch out from ours, and we in turn have branched out from other universes. It is hypothesised that in these parallel universes, the outcomes of every event are different, and each of these have played themselves out. While physicists devised this theory to explain the erratic behavior of quantum particles, Matrix Energetics uses parallel universes to tap into their endless supply of alternative outcomes.
Being well-versed in many techniques of healing Dr Bartlett often mixes and matches techniques to best fit the person at hand. His fantastic experiences however, far outnumber his learned skills, and Dr Bartlett constantly looks for explanations of these phenomena in the natural and supernatural alike. In this particular instance, he finds his answers in Sheldrake’s theory of Morphic Fields and Morphic Resonance. Dr Rupert Sheldrake who is a renowned developmental biologist at Cambridge University has compiled this theory, which entails a living, developing universe where nature has memory created over generations and organisms share telepathic relations. Dr Bartlett says that time and again he taps into this universal consciousness created by healers and shamans channelling their knowledge through him and he is not alone in speaking of this. Several other Matrix practitioners affirm being able to access this collective consciousness.
ME: Experiences and Interpretations
Aditi Surti, a successful hypnotherapist and integrated healer, from Mumbai, has used Matrix Energetics effectively. Being well versed in a number of healing techniques, what appeals most to Aditi about ME is the absence of set rituals and symbols and more importantly, the almost instantaneous capacity to heal. She observes that the removal of ritualistic patterns makes the system more versatile, allowing individuals to revel in what she describes as ‘a pure sense of play.’ While practising the various techniques of ME, Aditi often introduces modifications to suit the needs and temperament of each individual patient. For instance, Aditi occasionally asks them to use their own sense of awareness to locate their problem areas. In one instance, while treating a person who believed they suffered from low immunity, Aditi used the person’s own intelligence to guide her during the Two-Point. Being a strong believer in the doctrine that both the problem and solution are contained within our own body, Aditi asked the person to point to the region where the problem was situated and followed that up with a request to indicate the region where they believed the solution lay. Aditi then performed the Two-Point using these two coordinates and the person was left with a sense of immense peace. When questioned later, the individual described feeling that the low-immunity feeling had drained out, leaving a sense of comfort being within his own body.
Neha Patel, a clinical psychologist, hypnotherapist, and practitioner of art-based therapies, suffered acute pains during ovulation. After repeated visits to gynecologists and trying allopathic, ayurvedic, and homeopathic medicines to no avail, she finally found respite through Matrix Energetics. When Aditi performed the Two-Point on her, Neha felt a shift inside herself followed by a sense of relief, and light-headedness. She has even gone on to learn the technique from Aditi, and today enjoys practising it on herself and others. “So far everyone is responding very well,”Neha adds, “The concept of ME is a simple fact of our being. if that is understood and followed properly, good results and success are bound to follow.”
The art of transformation
Although abounding with complex physics, the only real challenge in mastering Matrix Energetics is one most of us struggle with – being able to ‘let go.’ Every Matrix practitioner constantly reiterates that in order to practice this art one does not need to know or understand quantum physics. The only thing one needs to master is being able to let go of the perceptions of reality, which have hardwired themselves into our brains. One needs to renounce what we accept as normal and move into a realm where everything is normal and anything is possible for once we achieve this, we allow miracles to happen. Transformation requires that we let go of our preset notions and try something new and daring. The less we do in terms of manipulating and understanding the process, the more we achieve. To quote a line from Dr Bartlett’s book, Be guided by the Unseen through the Realm of the Unknown. “The sense of the struggle creates the struggle. Let go and trust that it is done, and usually it will be.”
