There is only one disease-accumulation of toxic waste in the body. And there is only one cure-helping the body to remove the toxins. This is the radical approach of naturopathy which banks on fasting, diet control, hydrotherapy and other non-drug treatments

Arogya Mandir, GorakhpurTeaching and preaching nature cure

"The power to fight diseases is not in medicines but within ourselves.’’ And that is what the Arogya Mandir nature cure hospital wants to teach people.

The hospital situated at Gorakhpur in the Indian state of sUttar Pradesh was founded in 1940 by Dr Vithal Das Modi and was the first of its kind in India. Modi was advised by Mahatma Gandhi to build a nature cure centre in the lap of nature.

Today the 140-bed hospital stands on a 6-acre green land that is pollution-free and peaceful. Located in the city of the sacred temple of Yogi Baba Gorakh Nath, the hospital is well-equipped with modern amenities.

Over a lakh people have gone through the portals of the hospital, fully cured of their diseases. Another 20,000 people have received help through correspondence. The hospital seeks to provide to its patients scientific treatment through the drugless system of naturopathy and yoga.

The numerous ailments treated include arthritis, asthma, chronic dysentery, colitis, depression, eczema and impotency. Today, the centre is led by Dr Modi's youngest son, Dr Vimal Kumar Modi, MD, ND, and his wife, Dr Smita Modi, MS, ND.

Dr Vithal Das Modi (1912-2000) had also founded the Gorakhpur School Of Natural Therapeutics in 1962. About a hundred Doctors of Naturopathy (ND) graduate from their school every year. Till today, over 1500 students have received the degree and are practising naturopathy all over India.

An alumnus of the Benaras Hindu University, Dr Modi also participated in the Indian freedom struggle. While he was taking his bachelor’s exams, he fell seriously ill. When he did not see any results after three years of allopathic treatment, he successfully resorted to nature cure.

And that changed the course of his life, a life committed to the development of naturopathy. He was also associated with Vipassana meditation promoted by S.N. Goenka.

Arogya is the monthly Hindi magazine of Arogya Mandir, which has its dedicated share of readership. Many books on the subject have also been published. The bestseller Simple Cures for Diseases by Dr Modi has also been translated into Hindi and many other languages.
