Question 136. Hello, I am 19 year old male. Ques- how to concentrate while meditating ? As a student how much time should I give to chanting god`s name? Is physical darshan of guru compulsory? Should I take gods name while studying? I want to experience my soul within myself nd have supreme consciousnes..tell me what the best I can do which is appropriate 4 me?   - Harry On 7 April 2010

Concentration comes through practice. You must never give up. Concentration can be helped through what is called Tratak. Keep a lighted candle flame at eyelevel at a few feet distance from you. Keep on looking at it without blinking. Tears will flow out of your eyes but you must not blink. And of course, you must not watch too much of television. Television is distracting.

As much time as you can spare, you must give to chanting God’s name. In between two tasks even if you get a few moments, spend them in chanting God’s name. Chant God’s name as often as you can until it becomes a part of your subconscious and even in your dreams you will be chanting God’s name.

Physical darshan of the Guru may not me compulsory but it is very helpful.

Practice of silence and surrender to the Guru and God will help you to reach the goal.

Not many can do tratak like you for 35 minutes at a stretch. I should congratulate you on this achievement. For you practice of tratak once a day is more than enough.

You can wash your eyes and do any other exercise after doing tratak.

Tratak helps in concentration. Concentration leads to meditation. Meditation coupled with the grace of the Guru and God will give you realisaton.

In matters of choice, I believe the best is to leave it to the Lord. Pray to him, "Lord, I cannot choose for myself: You choose for me". Then, whatever be the first offer you get, accept it as God's choice for you.
