Question 6. I am 34 years old female. I have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Kindly suggest ways to delay further attacks and lead normal healthy life.  - Asha Deshpande On 7 January 2009

Multiple sclerosis is an auto immune condition in which the immune system attacks the central nervous system leading to demyelination. The body's own immune system attacks and damages the myelin and when myelin is lost, the axons can no longer effectively conduct signals. The onset usually occurs in young adults and is more common in females. The condition affects the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other. The prognosis is difficult to predict as it depends on the subtype of the disease, the individual patient's disease characteristics, the initial symptoms and the degree of disability the person experiences as time advances.

Homoeopathy is a system of medicine which has a different approach to disease and remedy. In Homoeopathy, the symptoms of an illness are viewed as a direct manifestation of the body's attempt to heal itself. These remedies attempts to stimulate the body's own natural healing capacity and hence has much to offer the person with MS. There is much that can be done to make life a little easier with the positive effects of the remedies on symptoms and also with the benefits of reducing conventional agents with their attendant side-effects. A specific Biochemic medicine Kali Phos can be taken 4 tablets 2 times a day.

Question 7. I am 21 and had a partial tear of my ligament in the left knee. Its been 2 years now but the swelling is still there and that part has become very weak.can u help me with this kind of a problem?   - Reddivari Siddhartha Reddy On 14 January 2009

The knee is the largest joint in the body and is vital to movement. The stability of the knee mostly depends on the ligaments and muscles around it and therefore, injuries to knee ligaments are common. There may not be any pain immediately after the tear but might hear a popping noise and you feel the knee give out from under you. Within 2 to 12 hours, the knees will swell, and will feel pain when one tries to stand. Apply ice to control the swelling, and elevate the knee.

As ligament tear can be very painful, the best thing to do is wrap it up to impede movement and keep movement at most natural position and take it really slow. Homoeopathy treats the person as a whole and focuses on the patient as a person, as well as the pathological condition. The Homeopathic medicines are selected after a full individualizing examination and case-analysis, which includes the medical history, physical and mental constitution etc. Homoeopathic remedies will help in speeding the healing process in conditions like ligament tear. As soon as possible following an injury that involves muscles, joints, or bruising, take Arnica 200 every 1 hour or 2 hourly. Later to improve the healing process further, medicines like Hypericum, Rhus tox or Ruta can be taken. Ruta is often useful after Arnica for sprains, pulled muscles, and connective tissue injuries. Hypericum is recommended if there are injuries to nerves. Ledum can be taken of the part is swollen and bluish and is better with cold applications. For pain Magnesium Phos can be taken in warm water evry half hour till pain subsides. Clacarea Phos 4 tablets 2 times a day is advised later to strengthen the muscles around the injury.

Question 8. Hi, I have a Morbus Parkinson since 8 years. Any clues?   - Arlene Catenacci On 22 January 2009

Morbus Parkinson is a degenerative disease of the brain characterized by progressive loss of mobility, muscular rigidity, tremor, and speech difficulties. The condition is mainly seen in people over the age of 50. Parkinson's disease is a debilitating and progressive disorder in which the chemicals that facilitate electrical transmission between nerve cells are depleted. This condition is characterized by muscle rigidity, tremor, a slowing of physical movement and in extreme cases, a loss of physical movement. The primary symptoms are due to excessive muscle contraction, normally caused by the insufficient formation and action of Dopamine, which is produced in the dopaminergic neurons of the brain.

Consultation with an experienced Homeopath is required for Parkinson's disease. Homeopathic medicines are selected after full individualizing examination and case-analysis, which includes the medical history of the patient, physical and mental constitution etc. A miasmatic tendency is also often taken into account for the treatment of such conditions. However, given below are some of the Homeopathic remedies for occasional use. Agaricus is given for limbs that are stiff but tremble and twitch. Gelsemium if there is considerable trembling and eyelids are so droopy that one may appear to be asleep. Violent trembling and twitching of the whole body especially after emotions is Zincum met. Plumbum is given if there is paralysis of single muscles and cannot raise or lift anything.

Question 9. What is the best way to deal with menopause ? I am now 50 and approaching menopause.  - Sadhna Desai

Menopause is the permanent cessation of menstruation. In human females, menopause usually happens more or less in mid life, signaling the end of the fertile phase of a woman's life. The typical age range for the occurrence of menopause is between the ages of 45 and 55 years. Menopause affects every woman. Premature menopause symptoms or early menopause symptoms may include irregular periods or hot flashes. Other signs of menopause include night sweats, sleep difficulties, and irritability. Menopause treatments may include hormone replacement therapy, although this is not for every woman.

Include soy foods and natural supplements in diet. If you have bleeding after menopause, call your doctor as it may indicate a more serious problem. Some women sail through menopause, while others experience imbalances in their bodies. Homeopathy can help smooth a woman’s path through this transformative time by matching her individual symptoms with specific remedies. Consult a Homeopathic physician before attempting any remedies. Homoeopathic medicines for hot flashes are Sepia, Graphitis and Lachesis which can provide relief. Nux Vomica helps in addressing night sweats. Ignatia helps in dealing with stress in menopause. Ferrum Phos 6X especially in Anaemia and Calcarea Phos 6X to deal with arthritic conditions are useful. 4 tablets 2 times a day for some months can be beneficial.
