Book Reviews - Meditate and grow
by Shivi Verma
To a layman the title may suggest a boring user manual on mechanical techniques that train us to sit still in a corner for hours without flinching. But a mere reading of one page of this marvellous book by Swami Nimishananda jolts the reader out of his ignorance. The book takes you on an inward journey to the soul in a subtle but friendly manner. Every chapter only strengthens your resolve to meditate daily in order to become strong, happy and prosperous. But the remarkable thing about the writing is that it resonates with loving understanding of all the practical obstacles one faces while determining to forge ahead in meditation and suggests simple tools to overcome them. While giving a step-by-step account of progressing in meditation, the reader’s interest is stoked by gentle encouragement and a vivid account of what perfecting each stage would accomplish in his life.
He teaches the reader to be aware and thankful of each and every element around him that makes up his life and how this attitude nullifies every unintentional bad karma created by him. When Nimishananda describes an ordinary day of a human being and how he screws it up, you feel that your own karmic life is being played out by a divine helper who is urging you to wake up. An excerpt: “Today, I have overslept. How will I manage to finish all tasks before leaving home? Will I be able to have my breakfast? If I don’t eat, my acidity will become worse today. What shall I wear today? Most of my clothes are not pressed..... Within the span of a minute we have generated scores of worries. That is why living our lives like a witness is important if we want to enjoy peace all the time.” As you graduate along every meditative step, Nimishananda gradually opens the door of perfect enlightenment to the hungry and excited reader. A book worthy of ‘chewing and digesting’ as categorised by my old mathematics teacher in school.
