Collective Consciousness - Warming up

by Life Positive

Readers share holistic tips on how to stay warm this winter

A very useful tip to keep the chills away is rubbing one’s soles with mustard oil. Mustard oil being heat- producing, it warms up what is a very vulnerable part of the body – the foot.

I find the pranayam exercise of kapalbhaati very energy-producing. Start slowly with just half a minute and build it up to three to four minutes in two weeks. This particular pranayam builds up heat in the body along with cleansing the lungs and massaging internal organs. It is a ‘must-do’ for me.

We Gujarathis have a lot of bajra, kichidi and garlic chutney at this time, since all these are heat-giving. In the North, winter is the driest time of the year as well as the time when digestive fires are high. Rich food like ghee, til and groundnut chikki are favoured. People also have a lot of ginger, mustard greens and corn, which are also heat-producing.
