News - Art And Soul

by Life Positive

September 27, 2008. Delhi was rocked by yet another blast, the second such incident within the short span of two weeks. While some people were bent on destroying faith in humanity through such mindless acts of violence, others were busy restoring faith in the inherent goodness among us all. The 'art for cancer' exhibition, a fund-raiser organised by the Indian Cancer Society, Delhi, in association with Atul Khanna of Soul Space, was one such act of charity that found supporters in the large crowd of people gathered for the inauguration, in spite of the blast earlier in the day.

The fund-raiser was the first such association of the Indian Cancer Society with the world of art. Funds collected from this show will be utilised primarily for patients' medical aid and their treatment at the non-profit healing centre, Prashanti, a unit of Indian Cancer Society. It provides complementary therapies that heal holistically with the mind, body and spirit, free of cost to cancer patients and their caregivers. Prashanti aims to alleviate the side effects of conventional treatment of cancer and help reduce the stress levels of patients of chronic disease.

The tone for the evening was set at the inauguration ceremony at 6 pm, where the chief guests were childhood cancer survivors who are presently undergoing treatment at Prashanti. The honour of lighting the lamp, marking the opening of the exhibition was done by Monica, Swati, Neeraj, Puran Shah and the centre of attraction, little Isha, who is all of two years old. The guests of honour then mingled with the crowd and enjoyed the paintings on display. Some of the artists whose paintings were showcased were Jogen Chowdhury, Shekar Kar, Paritosh Sen, Paresh Maity, Prokash Karmakar, Waseem Kapoor, Dalip Choudhury, Subrata Gangopadhyay, Partha Pratin Deb, Aditya Basak, Jai Zarotia and Bratin Khan.
