Freeganism is a response to the prevailing economic system where the profit motive rules all ethical considerations. The word freegan is a combination of ‘free’ and ‘vegan’. Vegans are people who avoid products from animal sources or those tested on animals in an effort to avoid harming animals. Because every purchase involves supporting the exploitative profit-driven economic system, Freegans rely on urban foraging or dumpster diving, which involves rummaging through garbage of retailers, residences, offices, and other facilities for useful goods. Discoveries are shared openly with one another.
