Poetry and Fiction - Sacred Space

Yes, I call India not a country, but an inner space. I call India not something that exists there in geography, on the maps. I call India that which exists hidden within you, and that which you have not yet discovered. India is your innermost space. India is not a nation, it is a state of mind…
The lotus flower has been very symbolic to the East, because the East says you should live in the world but remain untouched by it. You should remain in the world, but the world should not remain in you. You should pass through the world without carrying any impression, any impact, any scratch. If by the time of death you can say that your consciousness is pure, as innocent as you have brought with you at birth, you have lived a religious life. Hence the lotus flower has become a symbol of spiritual style of living. Untouched by the water… it grows from the mud in water, and yet remains untouched. And it is a symbol of transformation. Mud is transformed into the most beautiful and the most fragrant flower this planet knows about.
In the East you welcome each other with folded hands. In the West you shake hands. Do you see the difference? When you greet someone with folded hands you are saying, ‘I bow down to the divineness in you.’ When you are shaking hands there is no question of divineness. In fact, shaking hands was developed to be sure that you are not holding some weapon in your right hand, to be certain that you are not an enemy.
Secondly, the folded hands also signify that I am bowing down to you not half-heartedly, that both sides of me are together as totality – not as a split personality, not holding anything back. Because when you shake hands, it is only with one hand. It is only representative of one side, half of you. What about the other half? The other half may not be in agreement with the hand that you have given in friendship.
India’s way is not of searching with the help of a lamp. India’s way is like a bolt of lightning in the dark night. When lightning happens, all becomes visible simultaneously. In India, what we call experience, intuition, reveals all things simultaneously, like a flash of lightning. Hence, truth is seen in its totality, as it is.
Meditation never died in this country. Sometimes above ground, sometimes underground, but its river has remained flowing constantly, eternally. It flows today, it will flow tomorrow also – and that is the only hope for man. Because the day meditation dies, man will also die. Man’s actuality is meditation. You may be aware or you may not be, you may know it or you may not, but meditation is your inner core. That which is hidden within your breath, that which is hidden within your heartbeats, that which you are, is nothing other than meditation… If this country has given the world anything, if there is any contribution, it is only meditation. Then whether in the form of Patanjali or in the form of Mahavira or in the form of Buddha or in the form of Kabir or in the form of Nanak – names may have been changing but the contribution has not... Here in the East, meditation is something that you can float in. The whole energy around you is just like a river – it is already going towards the ocean. You don’t have to swim, you have to just float.
