Snake venom is often dangerous, sometimes lethal. But it can also be lifesaving.
For many years the venom of the Russell's viper has been used to stop bleeding in haemophiliacs, whose blood lacks the ability to clot.

But a chance discovery in 1960 of the effects of snake venom is today helping to achieve the opposite result by dissolving blood clots, the cause of so many deaths. Besides, it is believed that one of the deadliest snakes in the
world, the Malayan pit viper may help to prevent heart attacks. While much work remains to be done, scientists are hopeful that the lethal venom may one day benefit the health of mankind.
