Teaching Story - Hitbhuk Mitbhuk Ritbhuk

by Life Positive

One day Maharshi Charak transformed himself into a bird and landing in the market of physicians, asked one and all "Kourak?" (who is healthy?). After getting varied but dissatisfactory answers from all, he flew to a lonely place in a jungle and there he finally got the answer he was looking for from Vaidhya Vagbhatt. Answered Vagbhatt, "Hitbhuk, mitbhuk, ritbhuk."

Hitbhuk means to eat food that is good for the health and not according to the taste of the tongue. Mitbhuk means eating in proportionate quantity, as excess of everything is injurious for health. Even nectar consumed in excess can become poison. Finally ritbhuk means that the food you are eating must be purchased with honest and hard-earned money.

The basic points to be remembered always with regard to the proper kind of food and manner of eating are as follows:
• First pray to Lord for His Grace and then eat food
• Avoid talking or watching television while eating
• Do not eat in a hurry
• Always sit in a proper posture while eating
• Eat only when you have properly digested the previous meal
• Do not have negative thoughts in mind while eating and remain cheerful
• Always thank the Lord for His Grace after every meal
