With
fewer than 200,000 Tibetans living in exile and some six million
Tibetans living inside Tibet but lacking freedom to practice their
cultural and religious traditions, the survival of Tibet's rich
cultural heritage is in grave jeopardy. One of the most damaging
aspects of the fifty-year occupation of Tibet by the Chinese has
been the relentless social and economic marginalization of Tibetans
inside Tibet.
Today, Tibetan culture is at crossroads. Diaspora life has changed
the mode of its preservation. The test for Tibetan culture is
to be able to maintain its continuity while adapting to the changes
in the situation. One important factor in this is the ability
of Tibetan religious and cultural values to make themselves relevant
in the daily life of the Tibetan people, whether in Tibet or beyond
the land of snows. They should be made to realize that their cultural
heritage has value and much to offer the world.
