Meditation - Alpha For Abundance
by A Agrawal
When the will and imagination are in conflict, it’s always the imagination that wins. - Emile Coue
Gary Zukav, author of The Seat of the Soul, spoke on the mission in one’s life on the Oprah Winfrey show. He said, “You may do many things in life but when you discover your mission in life and take it up, the whole world will stand up and receive it.”
At spiritual crossroads, for Dr Vijayalakshmi Panthaiyan, a bank officer and fitness instructor based in Chennai, the words had the power of a revelation, giving her the answer to her relentless inner quest. Today, she is crystal clear about her mission: “To create a difference in the lives of people by empowering them through Alpha Meditation.” A spiritual healer, psychologist, and counsellor, she has evolved Alpha Meditation, a mind-power training programme that uses meditation to communicate with the subconscious, to manifest desires and goals in life. “Anything projected at the alpha level manifests in real life,” she adds.
Since 2000, Dr Panthaiyan, who also has a doctorate in Psychology, has trained more than 16,000 people in Alpha Meditation across 20 cities in India. Currently the managing director of Alpha Mind Power Private Ltd, Chennai, she evolved the Alpha Meditation based on years of research, and study of several meditation systems across the world and Indian mystical traditions.
As a 10-year-old, just before falling asleep, she visualized getting 100 per cent marks in Maths by projecting the event on her mental screen. And what she so desperately wanted, came true! Later, as an expectant mother, the young adult visualized a “beautiful baby”. That too came true. Much later, as a spiritual seeker, she crystallized these nascent happenings, backed by rigorous study of spiritual and mystic traditions, and systems of meditation, into a powerful method of meditative technique.
“My early successes were a build-up to what I am doing today,” she says. She quit her job after 25 years of “mechanical 10 to 5 existence. “I felt incomplete. There was this inner quest; a search for something more in life,” she recalls. A pioneer in the fitness scene in Chennai in the early 1990s, Dr Vijayalakshmi is convinced that the cause of obesity is in the mind. The mind is as important as the body in wellness. “Each person is different. There had to be something more than diet and exercise alone that is necessary for dramatic sustained improvements,” she recalls.
Initially, she taught Alpha Meditation informally to a select group of friends. “Encouraged by the benefits experienced by the group, I decided to formalise it into a class; a set of techniques based on my knowledge of several meditation systems. I also realised that people understand how it works logically if it is taught as a technique,” she adds.
All About Alpha
Alpha is eclectic in its approach and appeal. It is non-denominational and non-religious. “Alpha Meditation is all about empowering yourself by unleashing your mind. Hence, it does not fall into the boundaries of religion. Once you learn to use alpha power, you move beyond religion and gender,” says the perceptive Dr Panthaiyan.
Alpha meditation is a synthesis of psychology, metaphysics, spirituality, and science. These experiential workshops enable participants to activate their right brain, and function at the alpha level, thereby tapping into their subconscious minds. “At the alpha level, we can effectively solve various problems. Once we know how to use the alpha level, the floodgates will open, and life’s infinite abundance will start flowing your way. From being a ‘creature of circumstances’, you become a ‘creator of circumstances’,” she explains.

According to her, the greatest power is the subconscious mind. If we can delve into the untapped resources of this hidden treasure, we can manifest our desires and goals. She also explains that Alpha Meditation is similar to the meditation practiced by the siddhas of ancient India. Bowing to their wisdom and spiritual heritage, practicing alphonians are “alpha siddhas”.
Life is energy; pure energy. Every thought form generates energy. Thoughts are mental energy; the currency that we have to attract our desires. The mind consists of thought forms both positive and negative which create the circumstances of our lives. A negative thought form is a precursor to a negative event, and vice versa.
Paulo Coelho, in The Alchemist writes, “When you want something, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it.” The universe operates on the Law of Attraction. We attract not only what we desire; but more important, we attract based on the content of our thoughts. Therefore, we need to create a match between what we desire in life and the thoughts or vibrational energy we choose to attract those desires. This was one of the basic insights that led Dr Vijayalakshmi to the perception of the ability of a change in thoughts to effect attitudinal and behavior shifts.
Unleash Your Mind
Dr Vijayalakshmi highlights the paralysis of limiting beliefs with the striking metaphor of an elephant with one leg chained. According to her, an elephant whose one leg is chained to a post by a little chain, never attempts to break the chain, although it shuffles the other legs. Despite its strength, it accepts the externally imposed limitation. The elephant has passively accepted its circumstances due to the power of a thought form, which holds it back. She extends the analogy to human lives. “How many such invisible chains do you have in your mind, holding you back? Holding you from performing, holding you back from good relationships, holding you back from realizing your potential? You can break these chains, and surge forward by activating your right brain!”
Neurological sciences divide the brain into the left and right hemispheres. The left hemisphere is the logical brain. It functions in a neat linear fashion, and perceives the world in terms of categories. The left hemisphere works based on known principles. Anything unknown is perceived as ‘dangerous’. It is our ‘inner censor,’ the logical, rational, analytical part of our brain and ourselves. In contrast, the right hemisphere is the creative holistic brain that is associative and freewheeling. The right hemisphere governs creativity, intuition, emotions, and the power of the subconscious. As is evident, the functions governed by the left hemisphere are based on the external inputs from the outside world, while the right hemisphere functions spring from within us.
How It Works
The brain is an electrical organ that continuously emits small electrical impulses that can be recorded with an Electroencephalogram (EEG). The frequency of electrical impulses, measured in cycles per second (cps), varies from time to time, depending on the nature of the activity. The four brain wave patterns are classified as beta, alpha, theta, and delta, which correspond to different levels of awareness or consciousness. We function at the beta level (above 14 cps) or ‘outer consciousness’, when we are awake and conscious. The alpha level (7-14 cps), or ‘inner consciousness,’ is the twilight state between sleep and waking. In this state, the left brain is quiescent, and the right brain is at its receptive best. The theta level (4-7 cps) characterizes a deeper level of sleep, and the delta (0-4 cps) is an even deeper level (akin to samadhi experience); at its lowest it is a state of coma and at zero is brain death. Through systematic training and practice, a person acquires the ability to move through different levels of consciousness and thereby open himself/herself to the abundance in the universe.
Once the inner censor of the logical brain is bypassed, the child in the right hemisphere, ever open to possibilities and explorations, is dominant – the mind is powerful, creative and intuitive. “Any goal clearly visualized at this level will manifest easily. When the right brain is activated, all limits are broken. We realize our full potential. At the alpha level, nothing is impossible. Everything is possible. Instead of focusing on excuses for non-performance, the right brain helps us to focus on the end result that we wish to achieve, and guides us to achieve it easily,” explains Dr Vijayalakshmi.
The Alpha Mind Power workshops are a model for effective time management, planning and organisation. The articulate Dr Vijayalakshmi conveys complex concepts in a simple language that gets across to participants. She is not surrounded by a coterie of “disciples” who prevent easy access. Unobtrusive volunteers discreetly hover in the background to ensure that the programme unfolds smoothly. To ensure standards of conceptual clarity and authenticity, she initiates aspiring alphonians herself. Her initiations are done with the energy of the ancient siddhas with which she herself has been initiated. Her powerful initiations create a total transformation in a person during the workshop.
At the Alpha workshop, participants are introduced to these basic concepts by Dr Vijayalakshmi, through judicious use of effective power point presentations, and numerous appropriate everyday examples. Clearly even before the first hour, we realize that this is no “hocus pocus or mumbo jumbo”, but scientifically validated in modern times, combined with insights that ancient Eastern seers and mystics intuited.
She gently guides us to reach the alpha level by progressively relaxing the body and then the mind. With additional inputs, we gradually lower the frequency of the brain from beta to alpha. “With the unlimited powers of your visualization and imagination at alpha, you can have miracles happening in your life. They will happen so often and easily that they will seem to be coincidences. But ultimately, you will realize that it is the power of your subconscious at work,” explains Dr Vijayalaskhmi.
Dr Vijayalakshmi designed the Alpha Mind Power workshops after painstaking research that underscored the effect of meditation on the mind. Her in-depth interaction with global spiritual masters and first-hand knowledge of systems of healing such as Transcendental Meditation, Silva Mind Control, Vipassana, Melchizedek method of healing, Magnified Healing, reiki, pranic healing, Neuro Linguistic Programming, Siddha Inner Strength, Shambhavi, and Shiva Shakthi Siddha Kundalini Yoga Tantra, among others, have imparted additional insights and nuances that enabled her to fine-tune the technique. In addition, she combines her psychological counseling sessions with insights gleaned from mystic traditions and the healing systems. “Psychology in isolation tends to theorise and label. There are no effective treatment options. But combined with spiritual healing, one can achieve miraculous results,” she says.
Unlike many systems of medication that are passive, the Alpha Meditation is dynamic. Practitioners learn to use the mind dynamically to solve problems, resolve conflicts, improve relationships, reach material goals, and heal both themselves and others. Passive meditation produces a calming effect on the body and the mind. Dynamic meditation, in addition to the feel-good and de-stressing effect, enables the practitioner to train the mind as an instrument for effecting beneficial desired changes in one’s life and others. At the alpha level, a person is aligned dynamically in partnership with Higher Intelligence for the greater common good. Peace of mind and happiness, career fulfillment, creative expression, loving relationships, and vibrant health are some of the tangible benefits of Alpha Meditation.
Visualization and multi sensory imaging is central to Alpha Meditation. For optimum realization, goals must be programmed based on the BED principle: Belief, Expectancy and Desire. First, a person must desire the goal. Second, believe the desired goal will happen. Third, expect it to happen in the here and now. The use of all the five sense organs (or as many as possible) to project simulated events on the mental screen, is a precursor to the real life materialization. Because, as Dr Vijayalakshmi explains, events take place twice: First on the mental plane, and then, in the actual. “We need to ‘see’ what we desire, and then make it happen!” she says.
Through encapsulating spiritual principles, Alpha Mind Power empowers us to manifest our destiny. As co-creators of our lives, we realign ourselves with the harmony of the universe by a balance between thoughts and desires. Such life wisdom affirms and heals.
