The manifest world is regarded as the Matter or Prakriti in the Vedas. It is endowed with feminine qualities and represents the nurturing aspect of the cosmos. The animating principle, which inhabits Matter, is called the Spirit or Purusha, endowed with masculine qualities. The outer world, as we perceive it, is the play of dual forces of Matter and Spirit.
