Presently he is the spiritual head of Chinmaya Mission New Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon. He is actively involved in the various activities and projects of the Mission. He also oversees and manages the affairs of two Chinmaya Vidyalayas and a Chinmaya Degree College.
During his tenure in the capital, working with zeal and enthusiasm, he has won the hearts of those whose lives he has touched. His clarity of thought and the vast experience garnered over the years make his lectures absorbing and thought provoking. While studying for a Masters degree in Geology at St. Xavier’s College Mumbai, he took the momentous decision of changing the direction of his life. Following an inner calling Swami Nikhilananda quit formal education and joined the Vedanta course at the Mumbai Ashram of the Chinmaya Mission in the year 1984. He spent two and half years in intense study of the scriptures under the guidance of Swami Tejomayananda the present head of the Chinmaya Mission. He also had the good fortune to learn the entire Bhagavad Geeta and several Upanishads and other Vedanta text directly from Swami Chinmayananda.
He first began working as a spiritual teacher in 1986 at Ahmedabad. Apart from Chinmaya Mission Centre in New Delhi he has also served in the Mission centres in Goa, San Jose (California) and Dallas (Texas).
According to him spirituality is leading a highly rational, value based and active life culminating in Self-Knowledge. He considers dialogue a wonderful tool to learning and lays emphasis on the path of Self-enquiry, meditation and surrender. The spiritual seekers in the capital are familiar with Swamiji's easy style of imparting knowledge and his following has grown with the years. He is a born teacher with an inexhaustible supply of patience and compassion. Ruthlessly logical and systematic, he opens the doors to understanding the Truth, as it is, reaching the sadak or seeker at his or her own level.
