INTRODUCTION
Pandurang Shastri Athavale, who won the 1996 Magsaysay Award for community leadership, is a force to be reckoned with in his home state of Maharashtra in India. He triggered off a socio-economic revolution of sorts with his Swadhyaya movement—which continues to carry his good work forward.
