Ayurveda suggests that individuals should follow “Swasth Vrita” which means “healthy circle” routines that takes into consideration physical, mental and emotional aspects of humans making way to perfect health. The principles adopted by Ayurveda towards health and the preventive measures adopted in dealing with cancer and such innumerable life threatening diseases show that one can play a critical role in enhancing one’s own state of well-being. There are two aspects of usage of ayurvedic therapies one that uses the age old remedies in its original formulations while the other which is trying to decipher the molecular aspects of these drugs. Yoga as a way of life, including diet and lifestyle as well as Yogasanas, pranayama and meditation, seems able to impact cancer in many different ways with patients going into long-term remission from cancer. Detailed insights into effects of holistic Yoga therapies on specific mechanisms of cancer generation should provide understanding of Yoga’s potential contribution to cancer prevention and remission. This presentation attempts to consider Ayurveda & Yoga’s benefits in cancer & highlights some aspect of the study on evaluation of radioprotective effect of Tinospora cordifolia on patients on radiotherapy for Head & Neck Cancers. Tinospora cordifolia a Rasayana drug with AYURVEDIC PROPERTIES viz. Rasa, Guna, Veerya, Vipaka, Doshaghnata has constituents viz., Tinosporine, Tinosporon, Tinosporic acid, Berberin, Giloin, Beta-sitosterol, Cordifolide, etc. known to have pharmacological actions namely Immunomodulation, stimulates macrophages, genotype adaptation , Chemotactic activity and TNF production, Polyclonal B cell activators, Anti complementary activity etc. Studies have shown that it has been effective as a Radioprotector. Ours is a double blind randomized controlled clinical trial on 150 patients of which data on 50 patients is being presented here. The preparation, methodology, usage and dosage of the drug were as per the guidelines of the Ayurvedic Formulary of India. The effectiveness of Tinospora cordifolia was evaluated on patients by measuring before & after radiotherapy 1) Whole stimulated saliva. (WSS) 2) Mucositis grading (W.H.O.).(O.M.) 3) Salivary Epidermal Growth Factor .(E.G.F) Time Line Chart Weeks 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Drug administration ↑ ↑ ↑ O.M. Start of RT Compltn of RT, O.M W.S.S. W.S.S. E.G.F E.G.F Results & conclusion: Significant improvement in post RT salivary values drug intervention i.e. Tinospora cordifolia probably due to the Radioprotective biomolecules from stem and aerial portions which greatly reduces cytogenic (DNA) damage from radiation. Severity of mucositis is significantly less in study group probably due to its antioxidant, immunostimulatory, antiulcerogenic & hence radioprotective effect. In addition honey enhances its effect as it has a variety of positive nutritional and health effects & healing effect on the oral mucosa if consumed with the drug. |
