Adi Da Samraj, was a unique Avataric incarnation. During his physical life-time, he endured and saw the entire death process and all the after-death states.
his article is a small fraction of his teachings on death from his book Easy Death, and his discourses on the same subject.
The Denial of Death
Death is a universal obligation. It does not matter what race, religion or gender we belong to, how much money we have and what we have accomplished in our lives. Death is inevitable. It is also the one fundamental dimension of our existence, for which we remain the least prepared. Avatar Adi Da Samraj once pointedly asked his devotees, “How much time do you think you have? Did you get a promise when you were born? Are you ready for death right now? Can you handle it? Can you handle the death of the other?”
Serving your loved ones
In the following excerpt from a talk, Adi Da responds to a devotee about how she can best help her dying mother, “You should speak to her, even if she does not speak to you, and give her the feeling that there is nothing negative between the two of you. If there has been, you should, make it clear to her that you forgive her and feel forgiven by her. Make it completely clear to her that you no longer feel any limitations in your relationship. You can read to her whatever I have communicated about the process of dying and that she should have no fear that death will destroy her. She should know that death is simply a transition into other experiences that also pass, that she may resume a human existence and that, as she passes through these stages of experience after she leaves this world, she will be given help. It is true that, after your death, people come to help you — telling you where you are and what is happening to you — just as people do in this realm. Try to bring to her a sense of the reality of her situation — not the dismal downtown expectation that ‘when you’re dead, you’re dead,’ because that view is completely untrue, and worldly, and a terrible vision.
When the present body becomes too weak to go on, it is quite naturally abandoned, but it is not the destruction of the individual. Light cannot be destroyed. Because human beings are essentially forms of light, they continue to exist after death — but they also continue to undergo transformations. The purpose of your existence is to surrender to the Divine conscious light, until you most perfectly realise, the divine conscious Light itself. Your mother, then, should surrender to the One, knowing that the Divine Being is light and love, fullness, and happiness, and purpose and creative will — and she should let herself be carried without fear from this world by that great influence.
Letting go of body and mind
This excerpt explains how to prepare oneself for entering into and going through the death process: “As you approach and enter into the death process, settle your affairs in this world. Forgive and be forgiven. Relax clinging to all the relations of body and mind. Accept the naturalness, orderliness, and purpose of the death process, and relax into each of its stages as it appears. Release and relax all fear and cooperate with the death process like a woman in labour. Outer and bodily awareness will gradually disappear in the death process, but it is not necessary to lose consciousness. Simply keep attention on whatever replaces your present bodily and outer awareness.
Whatever experiences arise, after awareness of the dying body passes, continue to feel through beyond all recoils of the egoic-self. Surrender, beyond everything and everyone, into the divine spiritual current of love and bliss that surrounds and pervades all beings and phenomena.”
