Jamuna Rangachari profiles the inspiring story of Inder Singh who not just defeated multiple sclerosis, but in the process has turned into a guide and counselor to others
When my article on healing myself of multiple sclerosis (MS) through acupuncture got published in Life Positive, I forwarded it to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India (MSSI), so other patients could benefit. Through this organisation, I made my acquaintance with Inder Singh (name changed), an ex-IITan, whose grit and determination have helped him achieve a fantastic victory over this seemingly incurable condition.
In 2000, Inder had difficulty taking more than three steps at a time, and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The neurologist told him there was no cure for this ailment, and he would have to learn to live with it. At 38, the bleak prospect plunged him into depression. But the fighter that he was, he soon shook himself off the debility, and decided instead to focus on solutions.
Serendipitously, he had been exposed to the Silva mind control method before his diagnosis, and he now started practising it diligently.
Along with this, for nearly 12 days, he researched on his ailment primarily on the Internet, and realised that steroids, which were the only thing offered by the allopaths then, were neither safe nor really effective.
He knew he could have issues in reading, in bowel and bladder movement, and perhaps in mobility. With a will, he began to do pranayam such as kapalbatti, anulom vilom and brahmari every day.
At that time, Swiss balls, which are now available for improving mobility, were not available in India. Hence, he began attempting to stand on one leg at a time. He began by standing for one minute, one leg at a time, and has graduated to standing for 12 minutes on each leg, which is a redoubtable achievement even for the healthy.
At the same time, he scoured the internet for new solutions. He had read in the Harrison Internal Guide that lack of Vitamin D is the primary cause of multiple sclerosis, and that turmeric could perhaps be effective in resolving this deficiency. His research also showed him that turmeric improved the immune system. He bought and still buys fresh turmeric which is easily available in India, and consumes one inch of turmeric after boiling it with water every night.
Incidentally, today considerable research is being conducted in medical circles on the efficacy of turmeric; and a medical paper has even been published on its benefits for MS patients.
Along with turmeric, homeopathy seemed to offer a ray of hope. He got in touch with Dr Praful Vijayakar, who was the Dean of the Homeopathic Hospital, Government Of Maharashta, and began the medication but only after having it tested for steroids in a lab. Inder has been on homeopathy for the last 11 years. Determined to leave no stone unturned, Inder, who was once a non-vegetarian, has turned vegetarian.
Plan B
Despite his determined battle on all fronts to rout his illness, Inder also took into consideration the possibility of his condition worsening.
Multiple sclerosis often makes the vision weak and sometimes results in what is known as ‘double vision’. Determined to be able to continue reading, he learnt Braille and also downloaded the software, Jaws, that reads material from the computer to the blind. He even went to the National Association of the Blind, taught them Jaws and began understanding their world.
Leading a purposeful life and reaching out to his fellow sufferers now became his goal. He began to counsel patients of MS to lead a normal life and encourage them to take part in all the activities they liked, instead of being stuck in a web of self-pity. Till today, Inder spends every Sunday with a MS patient, counselling them and their caregivers. Often, he uses the story of his inspiration, Helen Keller, to make them understand there are problems greater than theirs.
Every Saturday, he also volunteers with ‘Teach for India (TFI)’, a nationwide movement of teaching the underprivileged as he does not wish to only focus on MS.
A miracle
In 2006, he took another MRI test and it reported that he did not have any lesions!
All the reading that he has done shows that if there is no attack for seven years, multiple sclerosis has vanished from his life.
At that time, Dr Alasdair Coles (Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Cambridge, UK) was on a visit to India in 2006 as an invitee of MSSI, Mumbai, and even he was absolutely amazed at the curing of this so-called incurable ailment.
Coming full circle
Inder continues to explore new solutions and even guides others to do so. For instance, he has now started having green tea regularly as he read about another MS patient who had improved dramatically due to antioxidants in green tea.
Inder is proof that if we can approach each illness, no matter how severe, with the intention of healing from it regardless of its verdict, we indeed can! And in the process our own life path will unfold gracefully.
