WHAT YOGA  & MEDITATION IS!

Yoga comes from the word ‘YUJ’ which means union or connection with all-pervading Energy or inscrutable forces of nature, which shapes, molds, creates, nourishes, generates all things created – creatures in animal, vegetable and mineral kingdom.

This union has to occur in awareness and enlightened consciousness. Various techniques, asanas (postures) are employed with awareness developed through concentration or free-ing-ness of attention from distracting objects, images, pictures coming from experiences loaded with thoughts, feelings-emotions in course of our daily living brought about by our interaction, thinking action governed by intellect, knowledge, and understanding.

This free-ing-ness leads to the spiritual experience of reflecting life-light energy, goodness, goodwill and good feeling of general welfare ease (free from dis-ease), peace, hope, and happiness.

Various postures have to be performed with constant awareness so that attention is freed from distracting thoughts. It is required to exercise restraint/moderation in eating, sleeping, working, keeping particular timings which helps in developing regular habits freeing attention and clearing mind - energy conscious of unnecessary burden - load.

Thus, attention which is the center of gravity or life energy focus frees itself from likes - dislikes i.e., craving towards agreeable or pleasant and aversion towards dis-agreeable or unpleasant. This leads to concentration on the present task, moment and /or activity, etc.

Thus, it is possible to let go of- pair of opposites (likes and dislikes, pleasant or unpleasant, agreeable or unagreeable) - and also let go of judgment, attachment, past guilt, future worries. Also, it is possible to accept people as they are, ignore other people's opinions, live in the present moment with awareness.

All these lead to happiness, alertness, aliveness, lightness, and energy - enthusiasm and wholesome purposeful lives.

This happens by experiential knowledge of impermanence in the worldly terms (mental thought world) of life - living, existence, possessions, wealth etc., experience of sorrow in worldly actions – i.e., world of reaction and the concept of anatman i.e., non doership of personal ego or knowledge of self as spiritual beings rather than body consciousness.

Along with this comes the knowledge of dominion of spiritual – energy & its qualities i.e., moral values, ethics, kindness and compassion towards fellow human beings, etc. over matter and materialistic attitude of possessive nature, accumulation and self-centered behavior.

Thus, this helps in-person becoming more compassionate, centered to social and society, more human, helping and developing himself with social specialization and attractiveness for the good of all. He rejoices in whatever may come or happens and works & thinks for the good of all / others unselfishly.
