Bajrangi Asana

May 2023

Doing the front split will be more beneficial to your health than indulging in a banana  split, advises Kamala Venkat

Hanumanasana, or the

Monkey Pose, is the

yogic name for the

famous front split. Hanuman,

the Monkey God, was famous

for his impressive and powerful

leaps as he was able to jump over

incredibly long distances.

Method

•  Come to a kneeling

position with your thighs

perpendicular to the floor.

•  Exhale and slowly try to

lower your hands onto the

mat in front of your knees.

Place your palms on the

mat and bring your right leg straight out  by keeping your right heel on the mat and  slowly sliding it between your hands.

•  As you extend your right foot forward,  slowly and simultaneously try to extend  your left foot backwards. Try to extend both  legs as much as possible. (Always practise  within limits; do not force yourself. Regular  practice will make you more flexible.)

•  Keep your hips facing forward and your  back straight. The toes of your left foot can  be tucked under. Hold this pose for 5 to 10  breaths.

•  Slowly release your legs and return to the  initial kneeling position. Then relax and  repeat the same steps, interchanging the  leg positions.

Benefits

•  Stretches and strengthens the hamstrings,  quadriceps, hips, thighs, and muscles •  Improves the flexibility of your legs •  Tones leg muscles

Contraindications

•  Hamstring, kneel, ankle, groin, or hip  injuries

•  Pregnancy
