Cyclones can be extremely dangerous, bringing strong winds, heavy rains, and flooding. Here are key safety measures to follow during a cyclone:

Before a Cyclone: Preparation

  1. Stay Informed:

    • Follow weather updates from official sources like meteorological departments and local authorities.

    • Install a reliable weather app with cyclone alerts.

  2. Prepare Your Home:

    • Keep outdoor furniture, plants, and equipment safe

    • Ensure your doors, windows, and roofs to handle strong wind.

    • In trees, remove weak branches near your home.

  3. Emergency Kit:

    • Keep drinking water, non-perishable food, batteries, flashlights, first-aid supplies, and necessary medicines.

    • Keep important documents in waterproof bags.

  4. Evacuation Plan:

    • Know your local cyclone shelter or safe evacuation routes.

    • Identify higher ground in case of flooding.

  5. Communication:

    • Keep your phone fully charged and have a power bank ready.

    • Communicate your plan with family or friends.

During a Cyclone: Staying Safe

  1. Stay Indoors:

    • Stay in a secure room away from windows, preferably an interior room or basement.

    • Avoid using electrical appliances and unplug them to avoid power surges.

  2. Follow Instructions:

    • Listen to the radio, TV, or reliable online sources for updates and instructions.

    • Follow evacuation orders immediately if issued.

  3. Avoid Water:

    • Do not touch wet electrical equipment.

    • Stay away from floodwaters to avoid drowning or contact with hazardous debris.

After a Cyclone: Recovery

  1. Wait for Official Clearance:

    • Do not leave your safe place until authorities declare it safe.

  2. Inspect for Damage:

    • Check your home for structural damage, gas leaks, or electrical issues before entering.

    • Do not turn on the power if there is waterlogged wiring.

  3. Help Others:

    • Assist neighbors or those in need, particularly the elderly, children, and disabled individuals.

  4. Use Safe Water:

    • Use boiled or bottled water to remain safe.

  5. Report Hazards:

    • Notify local authorities about fallen trees, power lines, or blocked roads.

Important Tips:

  • Stay calm and prioritize safety.

  • Always have a list of emergency contacts.

  • Avoid spreading unverified information to prevent panic.

Preparing ahead and staying alert can significantly reduce the risks during a cyclone.
