We rely upon spirituality to get peace of mind, presuming it to be the only way to pull ourselves away from the existent chaos around us. But, do pilgrimages, prayers, religious practices, and rituals actually ensure the goodness of our hearts? Or are these mere euphemisms for our spiritual passivity?
“Spirituality is always rooted in relationships and results in joy,” St. Paul had said. Hence, it is our altered approach towards people and situations in life that bring us peace and happiness. And what brings about that particular change in our approach? Sri Lankan author Susunaga Weeraperuma answers this question in his latest book, Clarity is the only spirituality.
The author explains the significance of mental clarity in simplifying the quest for one’s own truth. This is possible only when one untangles oneself from the cobwebs of ego, selfishness, regression, and narrow mindedness, and fuels one’s thoughts with humility, happiness, selflessness, and wisdom. Weeraperuma outlines how man’s desire for power, prestige, and stature has driven him away from genuine moral codes. “Why have we failed to change despite our rich religious legacy? Where have we gone wrong?” he questions.
Divided into 18 chapters, the book covers 18 significant concepts of life: From religious practices, tolerance, relaxation, and happiness to nationalism, chastity, fear, and solitude. It is embroidered with various real-life events by which the author explains how a little bit of self knowledge, consciousness, thoughtfulness, awareness, and clear thinking can make one respond, and not react.
Based in France, Weeraperuma spends his time indulging in Hatha yoga, pranayama, organic gardening, creative writing, reading, and meditation. His prolific publication range includes studies of religion, Buddhist philosophy, J Krishnamurti’s teachings, and meditation.
His latest offering lifts the fog of ignorance surrounding day-to-day notions that drive our life, and inject a fresh dose of clarity into the way we see it, without the smokescreen of conditioned beliefs blocking our vision.
