Life: a series of lessons

Dear Reader,

We have plenty of expectations from life and for most parts we are  trying to fulfil those expectations. We give our best to situations and  people hoping that we will be rewarded or acknowledged for our  efforts. However, life is full of surprises and unexpected twists and  turns.

Our best efforts may backfire and people might become hostile for no  valid reason, other than their own inner unresolved issues. Instead  of getting upset with life and the Divine for treating you unfairly,  this is the time to develop detachment from the drama called life.  To understand, that your real Self is not this earthly identity but  a celestial one. That incidents happen to remind you of your real  origin and purpose, so that you stay unbothered by worldly loss and  gain. This issue carries two articles, Find Your Gateway to Happiness,

and Cultivating Vairagya highlighting this aspect of life.

We also have an extremely heart-touching article called You Matter by Bijal Maroo which addresses the topic of feeling that your  existence matters to the world. According to psychologist Kipling  Williams, being ignored triggers the same part of the brain that  registers physical pain. In today’s times when it’s easy for people to  lose themselves in their respective virtual worlds, it is imperative to  make conscious effort to connect with people and make them feel  that they are important.

My uncle who is a doctor, took special care to socialise and stand by  people in their hour of need, often waking up in midnight to look after  ailing neighbours without charging them a penny. The result: when  he met with an accident and broke his leg, his entire neighbourhood  flocked by his side to ensure his well-being and to keep him from  feeling sad. Life is full of myriads of lessons, each being a  reward unto itself. The more you perfect them, the more at  peace you are.
