Editspeak The day of the guru

Dear Reader,

Every year, in July, India celebrates Guru Purnima. According to the Hindu calendar, Guru Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Ashadha (the month of rain). Also, the day observes the birth of the great sage Veda Vyasa, who wrote the epic Mahabharata.

The very observance of this day is a deep reflection of the ethos that prevailed in this holy land, where rishis roamed and birthed the loftiest philosophies aimed at the refinement and elevation of human consciousness. The day serves to remind human beings, the value of surrender to the guru—the embodiment of the highest and noblest possibility in a human being. This act aids a person in cutting the last cords of ego, which keep him entrapped in the 3D world of maya.

Contrary to popular opinion, it takes extraordinary intelligence to recognise a true guru, his effulgent inner self, and then surrender at his feet. Only a sincere seeker of truth and liberation realises the difficulties present on this path and how the guru not only shows the way but also hand-holds you to lead you safely out of chaos and confusion. Such a seeker is wise enough to understand the compassion of the Universe in incarnating as a guru and coming to the rescue of struggling humanity. Once he has tested the guru and found him to be true, he does not strive to maintain his small ego before the limitless Self of the master and lays it at his feet, thus freeing himself of human bondage.

The July issue of Life Positive carries an article on Guru Sri Sri Sri Vishwa  Sphoortiji, who has turned around the lives of his followers by helping them taste the divine nectar. One of the greatest experiences available to human beings is connecting with a guru, and only a handful get to experience this elusive joy. Enjoy the article.

We also have an article on young social media influencers who are creating content based on spiritual and holistic concepts. Pushing positive content on social media, unlike populist ideas, is a hard and long-drawn process, and the young creators must be appreciated for their conviction and tenacity. Do recommend these enthusiastic YouTubers to your children and get them inspired as well as motivated.

Have a happy July.
