God Compensates

Millions of viewers watched Pooja Chopra win the crown of Pantaloons Femina Miss India 2009.
However, at that time not many knew the tremendous sacrifices made by her mother that had enabled Pooja to reach this stage today. Speaking about her success, Pooja states that she won due to her mother’s karma. When this achiever was only 20 days old, her mother, Neera Chopra had to make a difficult choice – either her husband or her little girl child and she chose her child!
Unfortunately, some families in India are still blinded by their desire for a male heir and Neera Chopra’s husband and in laws belonged to this category. After a daughter was born, the pressure further increased on Neera to either produce a male child or suffer the loss of her marriage. In spite of ill treatment and severe mental and physical torture, she held on to the hope of improving her marital life if she could only have a son. Then, Pooja was born. Nobody came to the hospital to even visit the mother and child, and finally when Pooja was 20 days old, Neera made the choice of walking out on her marriage and taking the responsibility of Pooja and her elder sister Shubhra, solely on her shoulders.
Years of struggle followed, and there were times when every meal was considered a blessing. However, the intense bonding between the mother and her two children and the inherent faith that they would be able to overcome every hurdle provided they had each other, is what kept the family going. All these years later, when Pooja Chopra finally gave her winning speech and accepted her crown and her just place in the world – the family knew that God had finally compensated them for their faith!
