Urinary incontinence can  be described as an accidental  or involuntary loss of urine  from the bladder. It is not  a disease in itself but it is  a result or a symptom of  diseases or health conditions.

Causes

The causes of urinary  incontinence are many,  including ageing, prostate  enlargement, a stroke, or  a urinary tract infection.  Ageing is the most common  and main cause of this

condition. Wearing out of  the tissues of the kidneys,  hardening of the blood vessels  and the bladder muscles,  blockage in the urethra due  to prostate enlargement, and  general muscle debility can  cause urinary incontinence.  All these issues become severe  with increasing age, especially  for those over 60.

Though anyone can be  affected by this, it is more  common in women. About  58 per cent of women suffer  from urinary incontinence.

It occurs while sneezing,  laughing, coughing, or lifting  heavy objects. It also happens  suddenly as the urge to  urinate reaches a peak.

Besides the physical  discomfort and  inconvenience, urinary  incontinence takes its toll on  the patient psychologically  and socially as well.

Here are a few mudras  which can work on urinary  incontinence and can help to  improve the condition, there  by improving the quality of

Ashwini Mudra

This mudra isn’t a hand gesture; it is an exercise  that one has to perform.

Tense the muscles of the pubic region and the  anus, and those that we use to stop the urine.  Clench the buttocks against each other. Hold  this position as long as you can. Release. Do it  again. Go on increasing the time of tensing the  muscles. In one cycle, repeat this mudra at least  10 times.

Keep repeating the cycle whenever you get time  for a minimum of four to five times a day. This  can be done while standing, sitting, or lying  down.

Mootrashay Mudra

With the right hand, do the Apaan Mudra:  Touch the tips of the middle and the ring finger  to the tip of the thumb.

With the left hand do the Kshitij Mudra: Form  the Aakaash Mudra, extend, and bend the ring  finger in the air, not touching it anywhere on  the palm. Rest the tip of the Aakaash Mudra on  the middle and the side of the ring finger.

Practise for 16 minutes, twice or thrice a day.

Sahajshankh Mudra

Interlace and clasp the fingers of both hands.  Put the thumbs on the side of the index fingers.  Put your palms between the thighs.

Practise for 16 minutes, twice a day.

Mootrapind Mudra

Touch the tips of the ring and the little finger  to the root of the thumb, then place the thumb  on the back of these two fingers. Keep the  remaining two fingers comfortably straight.  Place your palms on the thighs.

Practise for 16 minutes, twice a day.

Jal Shamak Mudra

Touch the tip of the little finger to the root of  the thumb, then place the thumb on the back  of the little finger. Keep the remaining three  fingers comfortably straight. Keep your palms  on the thighs.

Practise for 16 minutes, twice a day, and once  before bedtime if there is a need to avoid the  urge to urinate during the night.
