Currently, our cities are not very green and produce a lot of waste. But this does not have to be the case,” claims Ribhu from the social enterprise, WasteLess, based in Auroville. Ribhu Vohra and Chandra Nusselein have been working in the sphere of waste management for three years, doing their best to reduce waste. Their strategy is to teach children how to produce less waste and how to recycle more. And to further the cause, they launched a new card game called ‘Pick It Up’ this Earth Day. The game teaches recycling in a fun, interactive way and can be a sure shot way to reach out to young minds.

“‘Pick It Up’ uses a lively card game approach to teach children how much of their waste is easily recyclable with local scrap collectors, and that all they need to do is segregate it. When they segregate waste it is clean and when waste is clean, it is more valuable,” says Ribhu. According to him, about 35 percent of our household waste is recyclable and valuable and 50 percent of our waste is easy to compost. This would leave only 15 percent of waste which needs to be sent to a landfill. Organizations that work with household recyclable waste collection claim that the average household in Indian cities produces Rs 115 worth of easy-to-recover recyclable waste every day. This game teaches children how to segregate in a fun and interactive way while building memory and concentration skills.

Most Indian municipalities do not collect segregated waste and residents feel powerless to change. The team at WasteLess believes than anyone can do the right thing and earn money at the same time. Once you know how to segregate, all you need to do is take your clean waste to them and collect money for doing good for the planet. In this way we can all contribute towards green cities today in India. “The game will soon be available online via eBay India as well as in various Auroville and Pondicherry sales outlets,” he informs.
