MUDRAS TO CALM YOUR MIND
Abhay Kumar Shah shows us four mudras to keep depression at bay in the current stressful scenario
We are going through difficult times. Due to the nationwide lockdown, we all are sitting at home without doing what we normally engage in. We are not used to staying in a limited space for such an extended period of time, and the worries about our present, future, job, business, and the health and safety of our dear ones are taking a toll on us. Negative emotions like tension, irritation, fear, depression, anxiety, and frustration take hold of our mind.
In such a situation, we need to build our defences against our enemy, namely melancholy. Described below are a combination of mudras which can be very helpful in regaining the normal state of our mind.
Mushti Mudra
Bend all the fingers, except the thumb. Place them in the middle of the palm. Form a tight fist. Place the tip of the thumb on the back of the ring finger and then touch the remaining body of the thumb on the back of the middle and index finger. Do it with both the hands placed on your thighs or on your knees. Remain in this posture for at least 16 minutes.
This mudra will boost your confidence and erase the symptoms of depression.
Prana Mudra
Touch the tips of the ring finger and the little finger with the tip of the thumb.
Keep the remaining two fingers comfortably straight. Do it with both the hands placed on the knees or on the thighs. Maintain this posture for 16 minutes.
Prana Mudra will boost the effects of Mushti Mudra and will fill our body and mind with positive energy.
If you wish, the third mudra can be performed after a break. You can do the same with the fourth mudra.
Dhyana Mudra
Keep the back of one palm flat on the thighs, parallel to the ground. Place the other palm on it. Meditate, if you can. Practise for at least 16 minutes.
Dhyana Mudra calms our mind, reduces disturbing thoughts, and helps us assess our situation objectively. Have you ever seen the images of Jain Tirthankars? Invariably, they are sitting in this same mudra, Dhyana Mudra.
Jnana Mudra
Touch the tip of the index finger with the tip of the thumb. Keep the remaining three fingers comfortably straight. Do it with both the hands placed on the knees or on the thighs. Practise for 16 minutes.
Jnana Mudra has infinite benefits. It bestows peace of mind, elevates and strengthens the mind, and relieves stress. It is the queen of all mudras.
Feel happy, relaxed, and enthused. Don’t let depression even peep in from the smallest window of our minds.
