It is said that energy flows where attention goes. In that case, wouldn’t it be great if we could only focus on the ‘rights’ of life, overlooking the ‘wrongs’? This is exactly what Dr Roshni Sachar, apositive psychology coach, recommends to her clients. “I help people focus on the ‘positive’ side of life,” says Dr Roshni Sachar, a pioneer of this modality in India.
Positive psychology is the scientific study of the strengths, virtues and other positive traits of a person or community and through that help the parties involved achieve a life of abundance, success, and satisfaction. She claims that it is starkly different from self-help techniques as it is a research-based science with tools and methods that help optimise the maximum potential of a person.
The Delhi-based psychologist points out how it differs from traditional psychology. “Traditionally, psychology focusses on what is wrong with the person, since it is a study of mental aberrations. On the other hand, positive psychology focusses on everything that is going right in that person’s life. It has a two-fold effect: it prevents mental illness, and it enhances holistic wellness.”Traditional psychology focusses on curing a problem, while positive psychology is committed to prevention. Vishal Gaur, MD of Wild Berries Bottling Plant, who attended her workshop on the subject, says, “The positive approach has given me a new perspective on how to shape my career. I can feel an impending turnaround in my business. It has helped me to find direction, and to put my ideas into a tangible plan of action.” Nishi Khurana, DGM at Indian Oil Corporation Ltd adds, “Roshni’s workshops focus on helping individuals tap their strengths and move on in their journey towards self-actualisation within overall objectives of the organization. It encourages them to perform at a higher level using their inherent potentialities.” Roshni, a PhD in positive psychology from IIT, Delhi, claims to be the first and only positive psychology coach in the country. Having grown up reading The Bhagavad Gita and The Autobiography of a Yogi, which she sees as her life guide, Roshni has always believed in the power of positivity. It is this strength that empowered her to come up with workshops, seminars and lectures for various organisations, in the midst of being a single parent to her young son. “This new applied science of human productivity is benefitting many corporations in the Western world. It is timefor Indian organisations and individuals to explore this new science and benefit from it,” she observes.
