The Alchemist in India
January 2003
Hark, all ye lovers of Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, for glad tidings await you.
Tom Alter, Paulo Coelho: meaningful theatre |
Theatre producer Ashwin Gidwani, whose earlier ventures included Mahesh Dattani’s Mad About Money, and some 10 years working with theatre doyen, Bharat Dabholkar, has bought the rights to produce the spiritual classic as a play not just in English but three Indian languages, Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi. And in following the mega marketing trends of our times, Gidwani intends to combine the play with book readings as well as a photo-art show where well-known artists will be invited to express their interpretation of the book. The English version of the play will be produced by the well- known director, Sunil Shanbag, and Tom Alter will play the protagonist’s role in the English and Hindi versions. Something to look forward too, right?
