The Root Of The Problem

“I had such a terrible day today,” said Rupesh, recounting how his teacher had got upset, his parents had got upset, and even his friends were sore with him.

“Why did your parents get annoyed?” asked Ananda.
“I lost my pen, so they were upset,” he responded. “But, it was not my fault. I had lent it to a friend.”

“Your teacher?”
“I forgot to get my book,” he answered. “But it was not my fault. I was feeling so bad about the way my parents had scolded me that I forgot about the book. It’s actually my parents’ fault.”

“Your friends?”
“They were annoyed with me as I had lost the tennis ball,” he answered. “But again that was because I kept thinking of the scene at the teacher’s table. I blame the teacher for this.”

“Do you see a pattern in this, Rupesh?” Ananda asked slowly.
There was a pause. “Bad luck,” he said gruffly. “Really?” Ananda asked again, gently, as he watered the plants and removed the weeds. “See, this plant died because I did not pay attention to the weeds in time. If only I had acted responsibly,” he said, shaking his head. And continued his work at the same pace. Rupesh blushed.

“The most important thing is to understand,” said Ananda, giving him a warm hug.

Apply it: Look within to understand the root cause of your problems, instead of blaming others.
