In an event organised by the India Foundation at the India International Centre, New Delhi, renowned American author Philip Goldberg waxed eloquent about the history and impact of India’s spiritual teachings in the US. He was in India to talk about his latest book, American Veda: How Indian Spirituality Changed the West.
Goldberg painted a compelling picture of this remarkable East-to-West transmission in his speech, showing how it accelerated through the decades and moved from the counterculture into American laboratories, libraries, and living rooms. “US physicians and therapists routinely recommend meditation, words like karma and mantras are part of everyday American vocabulary, and yoga studios are as ubiquitous as coffee shops. The insights of India’s sages permeate so much of what Americans think, believe, and do that they have redefined the meaning of life for millions of them,” he said. According to him, his book, American Veda, is a stirring tribute to India. “My chronicle shows how the ancient philosophy of Vedanta and the mind-body methods of yoga have profoundly influenced the US,” he added.
Philip Goldberg has also authored and co-authored around 19 books, including Roadsigns: On the Spiritual Path and The Intuitive Edge. Based in Los Angeles, he is an ordained interfaith minister, a public speaker and seminar leader, and the founder of Spiritual Wellness and Healing Associates.
