Can a deeper understanding of the nature of God have a direct impact on everyday life? Yes, says Annu Matthai, a Bangalore-based Christian Science healer who helps people find solutions to problems through prayer. “Healing happens when we understand the nature of God, and apply that understanding to our lives. If God is wholly good, omnipotent, or the only power, there cannot be another power that can cause evil. As we focus on this understanding of God as the only power and presence, and change our thinking, we find that the human situation changes,” says Annu. This system of spiritual healing – Christian Science – was discovered by Mary Baker Eddy in America. Eddy was healed of a life-threatening condition while reading an account of Jesus’ healing works. To investigate the secret behind her healing she researched the Bible and gained fresh insight into the Scriptures. As she applied her learnings about the nature of God as the perfect parent, tenderly caring for each one of his children, she was able to consistently heal herself and others. In addition, she was able to teach others to heal in the same way. She compiled this new knowledge in her book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, first published in 1875. A practitioner of Christian Science, Annu uses the Bible and Science and Health to help her patients heal themselves, by gaining a true understanding of their relationship with God. Praying with the understanding that they are his perfect spiritual idea, made in His image, as quoted in the Bible, restores health in all areas of life – physical, mental, financial or social. Eddy writes: “Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind” (meaning the divine Mind). She also describes health as “The absolute consciousness of harmony and of nothing else.” Annu claims to have healed herself of severe back pain by recalling that it was the power of the divine Mind that moved her. The faith in the Biblical verse, 'Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee” (Isaiah 26:3) was able to heal Elizabeth Kellogg’s long standing bipolar disorder.
