Bowen to the rescue
December 2017
Hard times are often a blessing in disguise. Each moment of suffering brings about a transformation that can change the path of one’s life. I can vouch for this this statement as my story is a reflection of this truth,” says Bowen therapy practitioner, Shiivani Mahajan.
Almost a decade ago, Shiivani suffered from a severe ailment. In search for a cure, she visited various doctors who failed to diagnose her condition. As luck would have it, she met an orthopedic surgeon in Delhi who diagnosed her condition as Chronic Myofascial Pain and advised her to try Bowen therapy for her spine. Her doctor believed that alternative healing techniques could heal her disease.
Chronic Myofascial Pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders today. Musculoskeletal disorders or MSDs are injuries and disorders that affect the musculoskeletal system responsible for movements in a human body, i.e., muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, discs, and blood vessels. Some of these disorders include tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. These disorders may also arise due to work-related stress and hence are, becoming increasingly common today.
Work related MSDs arise from arm and hand movements such as gripping, holding, bending, straightening, clenching, twisting and reaching. However, these common movements are not particularly harmful in daily life. They can become hazardous in work situations which involve continual repetition, often in a forceful manner, and a speedy way without getting any time for recovery in between.
Shiivani chose to listen to her doctor and started her Bowen therapy sessions religiously. “I can not thank my doctor and God enough for having shown me the way to my healing. Within a couple of months, Bowen helped me bounce back to good health and I was healed of my traumatic condition. I was so deeply impacted that I decided to learn this powerful technique and help heal others too. With God’s grace, in the past eight years of practice, I have lost count of the number of patients who have walked out of my clinic free of their pain and with healthier mind and body,” she says.
Bowen therapy is a holistic remedial body technique that works on the soft connective tissue (fascia) of the body. It can be used to treat musculoskeletal or related neurological problems including acute sports injuries and chronic or organic conditions. It is gentle and relaxing and does not use forceful manipulation. Bowen therapy is performed on superficial as well as deep fascia tissues. Fascia is the part of the connective tissue that envelops, separates and influences every organ and tissue in the body.
“My passion for Bowen therapy has helped people suffering from chronic pain and aches, and conditions like bedwetting, asthma, infertility, digestive troubles, hormonal issues, migraines. As I understood the mind-body connection while dealing with my patients, I was driven to learn some more modalities that would add to my efficacy as a wellness practitioner. Hence, I attended workshops on Bach flower remedies, Access Bars and colour therapy. With all these tools in my kitty, I can supplement the Bowen therapy expertise and design customised holistic treatment plans for my patients,” she says.
Shiivani claims that the Bowen technique is safe to use on anyone, from newborns to the elderly. It is a holistic treatment that treats the whole person and addresses the cause of problems, instead of the symptoms. “Bowen technique has never failed to surprise me. No wonder it is sometimes called ‘white witchcraft’ owing to its mystical nature and tremendous healing power. I always say that everybody is better with Bowen,” she adds.
