Books can be life-changing. I often find myself picking up self-help books, looking for the transformational element that can shift the way I look at life, the world, and myself. As I perused The Game of Change by Geeta Ramakrishnan, I found it to be refreshingly different. With relatable examples and practical techniques, the book inspires the reader to break free from attitudinal limitations.

The journey begins with a glimpse of the Monday morning blues being faced by Sonia, the author’s imaginary friend. A bleary-eyed Sonia rushes to juggle tasks that vary from struggling to wake up, to fixing breakfast and getting her daughters ready for school. After much chaos, mother and kids leave for school—but angry, upset, and exhausted. Very real and relatable, a situation most of us would empathise with.

Juggling various roles causes fatigue and gives rise to negative emotions, alienating happiness. A state of victimhood takes over and we fall into the rut of constantly living in anxiety and fear. So how does one exit this self-destructive pattern? We get the answer in one of the  chapters: “A hero is somebody who takes 100 per cent responsibility for their results in life. You always stay focussed, you have faith, you don’t give up easily.” The following chapters skilfully range over myriad topics like dealing with the challenges that confront a hero, managing time and stress, being emotionally savvy, striking a balance between the Yin and Yang energies, creating effortless relationships, aligning the head with the heart, being a parenting superstar, unlocking success, and many more. Chapter Unlocking Success throws light on epigenetics, a developing science that explains how one can induce positive change to be passed on to the next generation by altering the environment.

The book contains easy-to-use scientifically researched formulae to enable the change. The action notes at the end of every chapter proffer useful and well- researched exercises that help in the change. For all who are keen to be better versions of themselves, The Game of Change is not just a vade mecum but a friend too. With enlightening insights and practical methods, the book is a must-read for all.
