Lifting off

How do you escape the clutches of negativity, to fly high once again?
I recollect the pleasant events in my life, such as a visit to a hill station or an enjoyable family gathering. They instantly lift up my spirit and morale. I also sit in meditation and surrender to Him any worry, anxiety or botheration. Knowing that everything is changing and that the present situation will also pass, boosts my spirit. Cooking and enjoying the ware with my family is also a mood lifter.

I lift myself with breathing meditation. I thank God, the giver of breath, for the greatest gift of all – breath. The distance between life and death is only a breath.

Every time I feel low, I ask myself, “What am I feeling now?” I close my eyes and get fully into my feelings. I name these feelings, such as I am feeling hurt or irritated, and ask again, “Where in my body am I feeling hurt/irritated?” As I mentally scan my body, the affected part speaks up through various sensations, such as pain, heaviness, etc. Now, I just focus on that part and breathe out the feeling/pain etc. Within minutes I feel light.”

It takes a lot to make me feel blue. But when I do, I sit in front of my little mandir and talk to the idols. Just to vent! Sometimes acceptance is best and the easiest way out. My prayer beads help me move towards acceptance and I just surrender. Very rarely, some tears flow quietly, and the healing begins!

Whenever my energy ebbs, I close my eyes and remember the Gita, Upanishads, Lord Krishna and chant Om. This gives me immense power and keeps my spirits high.

Every time I find myself down in the dumps, this reflection helps me get over it faster – if another behaved foolishly or immaturely, how much more foolish of me is it to get upset over it?

I listen to songs that energise me, often singing along. Or I get myself a really delicious dessert and take my time enjoying it. If I can spare the time, I find going for a brisk walk makes me feel much lighter.
