Laugh your way to health
Rupa Bannur, a former IT professional
turned holistic health coach from  Bangalore began turning to laughter  yoga in 2001 after she faced profound loss of  precious family members. Her father died of a  massive heart attack, and in three months time  her younger brother passed away too. This left  her and her mother grappling with grief and  devastation. During this dark time, her mother  discovered laughter yoga. It was introduced to  her by a teacher who visited their home and  it soon became a lifesaver for them. It helped  her cope with the immense trauma of losing her  husband and son.
Laughter yoga is a transformative therapy  pioneered by Dr. Madan Kataria from Mumbai.  It involves various laughter exercises designed  to stimulate the brain to release endorphins—
the body’s natural happy hormones. In a world  overwhelmed by stress and anxiety, these  sessions offer a powerful antidote, promoting  mental clarity and physical well-being without  any side effects.
Since then, Rupa and her mother have shared  laughter yoga sessions at her brother’s school,  her workplace, and various organisations,  witnessing its remarkable benefits on releasing  stress, depression, anger, anxiety.
During the pandemic, stress and anxiety were  widespread. Lakshmi, a 53-year-old senior IT  professional, reached out to Rupa for help.  Through regular practice of laughter yoga, she
experienced a significant reduction in stress  levels.
Beyond physical benefits, laughter yoga  addresses profound societal challenges like  loneliness. The WHO highlights loneliness as  a significant public health threat, contributing  to conditions like dementia and heart disease.  Laughter yoga, with its emphasis on social  connection and positive energy, is a potent tool  against isolation, fostering community and well being.
The benefits of laughter yoga are as under: Laughter increases productivity, teamwork and  job satisfaction!
Laughter causes endorphin release.
Improves circulatory and cardiovascular health It boosts the mmune system.
Fifteen minutes of laughter equals the benefits of  two hours sleep.
Laughing for fifteen seconds add two days to  your life span.
One good belly laugh burns off point five calories!
