Can diabetes be reversed
February 2016 O
Once a patient went to a doctor and said, “I have diabetes because it runs in my family.” The doctor replied, “No. You have diabetes because no one runs in your family.” Life Positive chairman Aditya Ahluwalia converses with Drs Tuli, Chauhan and Sharma Dr Ravinder K Tuli, Founder of Society for Holistic Advancement of Medicine (SOHAM), shared this at a panel discussion on ‘Holistic Systems of Cure and Management of Diabetes’, organised by Life Positive Foundation in collaboration with India Habitat Center, New Delhi, under its monthly ‘On the Growth Path – a series of free talks’. Dr Tuli apart, the eminent panel consisted of Dr Pratap Chauhan, Founder of JIVA Ayurveda, and Dr N K Sharma, renowned naturopath and reiki master. Aditya Ahluwalia, Chairman, Life Positive magazine, moderated the discussion. The prime cause of diabetes, all three specialists agreed, is our separation from nature. Dr Chauhan shared that Ayurveda had talked about 20 types of diabetes thousands of years ago. “The adage, ‘you are what you eat’ should be modified to ‘you are what you digest’,” he further stated, explaining how undigested food in the stomach produces a toxic mucus – aama – which seeps into various organs and affects them. Aama blocks pancreatic channels, reducing the flow of insulin, hence increasing blood sugar levels. According to Dr Sharma, junk food and faulty food combinations put undue stress on the digestive system. “We eat highly acidic foods. Our bodies need alkaline food to restore the balanced pH. Drinking milk tea with sugar early in the morning on an empty stomach increases acidity. Such activities degenerate the body,” he said. Dr Chauhan explained the concept of pragya apraadh which means offending our intelligence in matters of choosing our diet. “Thanks to our intelligence, we all know right from wrong when it comes to food, but we do not heed it because our minds are filled with rajas and tamas gunas,” he added. Dr Tuli further said that 50 per cent of diabetes patients can keep their sugar levels in equilibrium by diet alone, shielding the body from Getting frequent infections. “Use of fermented foods like curd and sodium bicarbonate can keep your acidity in check, naturally,” he shared. Dr Sharma suggested that out of the three daily meals, at least one should be completely raw and the remaining two accompanied by a bowl of sprouts. “Higher the fibre in your meal, better the digestion,” he remarked. Dr Chauhan also said that Ayurveda can definitely reverse diabetes, provided people develop faith in the modality’s potency. The evening was a resounding success as the audience hung on to every word of the experts, seeking answers and practical tips.
