Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word yoga comes from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness. In Indian spiritual context it means the unification of Atma, the soul with Parmatma, God. It is a meditation which provides plenty of confidence, calmness, peace and knowledge, which improves the quality of life. It is believed to bestow enlightenment which otherwise lies dormant in human beings.
Today, yoga is practised in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity. Recognising its universal appeal, the United Nations proclaimed 21st June as International Yoga Day (IYD) on 11th December, 2014. Proposed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, this day happens to be the longest day of the year. The date carries special significance as any spiritual practice performed on this day is supported by the universe. IYD is now in its third year and this year’s theme was ‘To pledge to make yoga an integral part of my daily life’.
Yoga enthusiasts around the world performed asanas at several events. Many countries that were unaware of our tradition and culture are now connecting to us through yoga.
Airport Authority of India, a pioneering force in the promotion of Indian tradition and culture, too organised yoga sessions for its officials at all airport premises on this day. The initiative received a massive response. The participation of numerous employees of AAI shows the great value the organisation attaches to promoting awareness about wellness in its family. We believe, "A healthy mind excels in matching the mission of the organisation."
The simple practice of yoga for just half an hour a day can transform our lives. Therefore making it an integral part of our routine, in tune with this year’s theme, should be our mantra; a mantra for a better, healthier life!
