October 2017 Airports Authority of India’s (AAI) approach towards CSR and sustainability is to empower under-privileged communities near its airports and to create an environment of inclusive growth. For instance, construction of a new school building for Dum Dum Airport Girl's High School which was inaugurated by Dr Guruprasad Mohapatra, AAI Chairman, in Kolkata in June. The new building consists of 16 classrooms and various other rooms and spaces for miscellaneous activities, ramp provision and dedicated toilets for physically disabled. Apart from these, the school also has rooftop solar panels, a fire alarm system, CCTV cameras, computers and furniture. With an objective of strengthening the health services in the remote north-east region, AAI has also provided an ambulance service with advanced life support systems (ALS) for Longding District of Arunachal Pradesh. This ALS ambulance will be a great support to the regional primary health centre facility. AAI has also developed a project in Pakyong, Sikkim, to address the needs of local community which is most affected by the upcoming Greenfield Airport at Pakyong. One is the Pakyong Health Centre which provides 24x7 advanced medical facilities and emergency health care services to nearly 14,000 people living within 25 km area of the Pakyong town. The second initiative is the rural water supply project which substantially provides drinking water facility to over 2400 residents of Losing and Dikling villages. In collaboration with the Department of Health, Government of Sikkim, AAI has started a state-of-the-art medical mobile unit with advanced medical diagnosis facilities which will be catering to the health needs of over 600 people every month, residing in remote areas of Pakyong district of Sikkim. It is also equipped with high quality technically advanced diagnosis and treatment facilities. The unit also provides a doctor’s chamber, patient examination chamber, chemical toilet, PA system, and canopies for patients waiting area. AAI recognises the need for improved sporting infrastructure in rural India. Taking this into consideration, a double mat ‘wrestling-cum-multipurpose’ hall has been constructed in Baraut, Uttar Pradesh, a place teeming with wrestling champs and aspiring grapplers. AAI Board has approved of various other CSR proposals for the year 2017-18, like setting up of Central Kitchens at Hazaribagh (Jharkhand) and Guntur (Andhra Pradesh) through Akshaya Patra Foundation; financial support for establishing ‘Badlav School’ in Tihar Jail, New Delhi; promotion of health care under ‘prevention by treatment’ of below poverty line (BPL) pediatric patients and those suffering from cancer at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai; funding cochlear implants in children with hearing impairment; assistance in upgrading services of pathology department of Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Silchar, Assam; financial assistance for purchase of office furnishing and appliances for the Centre for Excellence in Education. AAI also plans to construct toilets in 20 government schools of Ajmer District in Rajasthan and provide the residents safe drinking water. The efforts of Airports Authority of India have benefitted a large number of people, especially communities residing in airport neighbourhoods.
