Connecting with yourself is the surest way to overcome the distress prevalent in today’s world, says Mohanji
Mallika, an eighteen-year-old, asked me at a satsang, “Could you tell me one essential thing to succeed in life?” I replied, “self-acceptance” and explained further as follows:
We are constantly affected by many factors, the main ones being competition and information overload. Battered by the incessant waves of inevitable competition, self-acceptance is the safety jacket that will keep us afloat. We are the most original and authentic work of art that we can rely on. To truly experience this, we should let go of our default tendency to prove ourselves when provoked and express our originality despite the provocations. We all have our stories and are different personalities, none higher or lower than the other. If we miss ourselves in this lifetime, we miss this lifetime. We can accept or reject anything or anybody. However, our likes or dislikes do not matter to the world. If you can’t find your soul, then you can’t find other souls. We have to accept ourselves with all our weaknesses and strengths. We must practise self-acceptance and realise that we do not always have to succeed. Failure is acceptable too, because, in reality, it makes us wiser and stronger.
The second factor is information overload that reduces our retentive power. We get a tremendous flow of unnecessary information through the media, which eclipses even essential information like phone numbers. We are programmed to allow our mind and our senses to graze over the familiar terrain of the Internet, always seeking greener and juicier pastures. We ‘eat’ more than we can digest. As this exercise is repeated day in and day out, we become insensitive and get addicted too. We become slaves who have learned to enjoy this state, ignorant that we have become social misfits who have lost the ability to love, feel, and withstand various tests of life. Many people are addicted to various things to escape from themselves and their situations. Self-connection is the most important connection. Gadgets separate us from ourselves. Moderate use is absolutely fine, but addiction is detrimental. So beware!
We have only five senses to experience millions of objects, but you can experience only one thing at a time. Each experience results in either happiness or sorrow. This is life. How can you be complete? There is a manual for it—how to live a good life and be complete. The name of the book is YOU. The only book you need to read in one lifetime is YOU. It doesn’t matter whether you like somebody else. But if you don’t like yourself, you have a problem. The scriptures recommend spending quality time with yourself. You keep seeing others as separate from you. But the moment you start shifting your awareness, you will see nobody outside of you. You will only see yourself expressing through another person. Just connect to yourself more and more. You will actualise yourself.
