The night Megha Bajaj learnt to let go of comparisons and competitiveness
There is something about the night skies that fills me with awe. No matter how the day has been, if I can just look up, breathe into the beauty of the stars, the moon and the random planets, I feel life is beautiful once again.
It had been a strange day. Somehow I wasn’t feeling at my peak. In fact was feeling a little beat as I had lost an important project to competition. I wondered how to get that edge. How to be better. How to, how to, how to…
It was with these thoughts that I made myself a hot cup of dark chocolate and sat at my window. The moon was a crescent and it looked like God Himself was smiling at me from the sky. I felt cheered. The dark chocolate gently filling my being and the smiling moon made me feel very relaxed.
In peace, all the answers come. Though I had heard a million times that one doesn’t need to compare oneself with others, that your competition is only you, you only need to better your yesterday – it was that night that the knowledge actually became an experience.
Even though the moon worked upon borrowed light from the sun, and was filled with more craters than one would care to count, it had caught the fancy of writers, and lovers and poets. The reason? It never tried to be anything but what it was. Sometimes full, sometimes null, sometimes half, sometimes quarter – it stayed true to who it was. It did not compete with the sun, it did not compare itself to the stars. It was what it was.
In fact everything in nature is so much in harmony because of this. The eagle doesn’t have a superiority complex because it has bigger, broader wings. The crow doesn’t have an inferiority complex because it is black. The winds don’t feel stronger than the mountain, neither does the mountain believe it is mightier than the ant. Everything just is. And everything has a place of its own.
Strangely, it is only us humans who compare. The most intelligent of all species and yet we spend so much of our divine energy and time wondering if we are better than the other, if we are okay, if we are lesser, and how we can somehow feel better about ourselves.
That night I somehow just let go. In fact the very word competition for the first time dropped from my head. Professionally, I was doing something that I loved to do as it seemed to give my soul some fulfillment. Just because someone else was doing something in the same area didn’t mean anything. Yes, we all can learn from each other. We all can wonder together how better to do what we do. But where is the question of competition? He is on his journey. She on hers. And I on mine.
That night I somehow just let go. In fact the very word competition for the first time dropped from my head
Ever since that magical night when the moon whispered to me, I find myself so energised. Somehow that unnecessary drain of wondering who else is doing what else, and comparing myself to it no longer has a hold on me. It’s no longer even a fleeting thought. I am here to be me. The best me. To fulfill my soul’s unique desires. While I will interact with many, while I will learn from many – I refuse to spend a single moment in futile comparisons.
It’s so beautiful to be me. No one else in this population of billions shares my exact genetic make-up, my past, my hopes, my disappointments, my dreams. We are one of a kind. And it’s about time we knew it.
