If we can ignore the negative within us even when it is prominent and celebrate the positive even when it is not, we will thrive, says Suma Varughese
As the light of awareness is slowly filtering into my mind, the veils of maya are gradually lifting. I am realising deeply and with much chagrin, how much I had bought into the illusions woven by that wily entity.
One powerful illusion that is slowly waning is the belief that we are the sum of our conditioning. How many times have I said and thought about how absent-minded, hot-tempered and lazy I was? How many times have I vainly tried to overcome these defects within me and strove to free myself of them?
Now I am increasingly realising that in actuality I am whole and perfect and I can completely ignore all evidence to the contrary. For these are illusions propped up by my belief in and constant reiteration of them. When I cease to energise them with my attention and my belief, they will wither and die.
Sadly, my obsession with the less than perfect aspects of myself so completely hijacked my attention that I simply had none to spare to affirm, applaud and acknowledge the parts of me that were whole and complete. Even though deep inside I love being who I am and would rather be me than anyone else, how many times have I brought up that thought to the conscious level? Rarely, because I have been far too busy ruing my defects.
In the same way, I am recognising that my body too is whole and perfect and that every part of my body vibrates with health and well-being. That is the reality. All the aches, pains and diseases I have been giving so much attention to are illusory. They exist because of my overwhelming attention to them.
Ill-health has no reality of its own and will easily fade away in the presence of refulgent health. | ||
When I eat something I should not, my body immediately tenses with fear about how it will affect some condition or the other. The fear naturally breeds whatever it resists, which loops me into a tailspin of more fear, resistance and frustration with myself. The truth though is that I can eat anything I want because my body is perfect, my digestion is perfect, my lungs are perfect and so on.
Al I need to do is ignore these illusory signs of ill-health and simply do whatever I can to emphasise my health – by exercising the body, eating right, breathing deeply, and becoming aware of the parts that are functioning optimally.
Darkness can be eliminated by flooding the room with light, because it has no reality of its own. In the same way, ill-health has no reality of its own and will easily fade away in the presence of refulgent health.
The truth is that almost from the time we are born we are programmed to take the positive for granted and strongly resist the negative.
As long as we enjoy perfect health, do we even notice the body? But let the body be racked with even the smallest cold and we can think of nothing but how miserable we feel.
We don’t notice relationships that are working fine, but should a grain of conflict enter it one of them, and we can think of nothing but that particular person.
When we learn to reverse this tendency by ignoring the negative even when it thrusts itself at our attention and by celebrating the positive, our lives and our health will thrive.
