Your handwriting is a direct conduit between you and your subconscious mind, and a minor shift in the way you dot your i’s or cross your T’s could bring changes to your life
You can bring about positive changes in your professional, social and even personal life by learning to write right—since the way you write determines the manner in which you live your life. Or so claims Bart Baggett, director of Grapho Analytic Institute of Handwriting Analysis, author of several books on the subject and one of the leading experts in the USA.
Baggett, who had come to India to conduct workshops, became interested in handwriting at the age of 14 when his father, a psychologist, showed him facets of his personality through handwriting analysis. So fascinated was Baggett by the subject that he went on to study it in detail with Dr Ray Walker, a famous American graphologist. Meanwhile, he kept pouring over the handwriting of friends and their family members. ‘It helped me understand everyone so much better. It also helped me understand myself, and gave me the clue to what I wanted from life,’ he says. By the age of 23, he had even written his first book, The Secrets to Making Love Happen.
According to Baggett, there is no such thing as a good or bad handwriting. ‘Only nuns and school teachers can be expected to have a perfect one,’ he says. Actually, each individual’s handwriting is unique, and the chances of two persons having identical handwriting are one in a billion! ‘One cannot really make out gender, age, race or even the fact that you are left- or right-handed when you analyze a person’s writing. In fact, all the personality differences attributed to left and right-handers are nonexistent in their writing. Except, of course, that left-handers might be a bit more introverted, thanks to the pressure on them to live and write in a right-handed world,’ Baggett argues.
So how does handwriting reveal your innermost secrets? And most importantly, how can you improve your life by changing your handwriting? Bringing out a deck of grapho handwriting trait cards and proceeding to illustrate the way one can make out certain stock traits in a person through handwriting, he says: ‘There are 72 typical personality traits that are revealed in certain styles of forming letters of the alphabet. These are present in different permutations and combinations in every person. For example, the way you cross the letter t reveals almost 17 things about you. If a person is crossing the t at a low point, then he has a low self-esteem, but if he is crossing it at a higher point then he has a much better sense of self-worth.’
Interestingly, Baggett says that one’s handwriting develops till the age of 17, and parents can help modify a child’s handwriting to change certain personality traits in him. The way a person loops his D’s shows how stubborn he can be, but if you can teach a child at an early age to loop this letter in a correct manner, then you will have someone who is flexible and open to learning.
A skeptic might wonder how the process works, but Baggett offers a scientific explanation: ‘Do you know that any habit takes a month to form? Similarly, changing your handwriting for a month will help change your personality. Many times people are unaware of their negative traits. But if you analyze their handwriting and show them why they may not be doing so well in life, and what personality trait is blocking them from this, then they will try and make a conscious effort to change it. Let us say that a certain way you form a letter is also a symbol for one aspect of your personality. If you consciously change that symbol then a different response will be sent by your neural synapses to your brain and voila! You will find that within a month it will change the electrochemistry of the brain, which, in turn, will change your perspective on many things. It is a two-way process, your personality affects your handwriting, and changing that trigger can give rise to a new personality trait.’
Baggett also offers tips on changing your love life. He points out that people looking for a mate must always go for someone with a similar handwriting. If an extrovert with a right hand slant tries to develop a relationship with an introvert with a left hand slant, that would create problems.
v Giving another example, Baggett says that a person who is overly jealous has a handwriting with small tight beginning loops in forming letters. If this person practices bigger loops, then the trait will gradually diminish. Results come from the willingness to change. He points to his longtime girlfriend Leann to show how their relationship developed thanks to his expert knowledge of handwriting.
‘The best thing,’ says Baggett, ‘is to work on one trait every week, and then keep persisting with it, till it gets solved. Graphology is like any other therapy. The focus must be on the individual. There is no set formula to tell you how to be successful in life, but if you can understand the way your subconscious mind works, then the solution must be tailor-made for your requirements.’
You may have also noticed that handwriting is linked with your moods. You tend to write well when you are in a good mood. It is the most unconscious output of your brain. Which is why graphology makes sense.
So, if changing your handwriting can really change your life for the better, then it is time you picked up a pen and began writing right!
