Dr. Coomi S. Vevaina explains how by changing beliefs at the subconscious level, PSYCH-K helps us take responsibility for our lives, transcend differences and arrive at oneness
As we move into 2012, almost every single day, a new self-empowering modality emerges, clamours for our attention and claims to be the best ever. If in the past we had very little choice, we now feel overwhelmed with the choice available to us. Most ‘life-for-soul’s-sake’ enthusiasts end up putting many of these modalities into their shopping cart, but like the proverbial ‘puzzled centipede,’ feel incapable of moving in any one direction to change their lives in meaningful ways. Given this scenario, what makes PSYCH-K unique and worthy of our attention?
Psychologists and self-help gurus have rightly informed us of the power of positive thinking and, with characteristic clarity, Mahatma Gandhi delineated the link between beliefs and our destiny with the words:
“Your beliefs become your thoughts
Your thoughts become your words
Your words become your actions
Your actions become your habits
Your habits become your values
Your values become your destiny!”
We understand that but how do we keep our beliefs positive? We try affirmations and various other modes of self-talk, but find ourselves lapsing into negativity repeatedly. Our failure causes us to berate ourselves, and we feel that, unlike others, there is something intrinsically wrong with us. The anguish causes us to move to some other modality, but the same cycle repeats, step by step.
By blending scientific research in brain dominance theory with ancient mind-body wisdom, PSYCH-K (a powerful form of Energy Psychology) suggests a way of breaking the fetters of this cycle. Rob Williams, psychotherapist, author, and originator of PSYCH-K, who pioneered the modality in 1988, believes that the old formula of counselling – ‘insight plus will power equals change’ – is ineffectual, for it targets the conscious mind, while totally ignoring the subconscious mind. Bruce Lipton, PhD, (cellular biologist, researcher, acclaimed author and teacher), strongly supports Rob Williams’s thinking. In his groundbreaking book, The Biology of Belief, which dovetails the latest research in cell biology and quantum physics, he explains that the conscious and subconscious mind, though very different, are ‘interdependent.’ The conscious mind is the creative mind that can create plans and positive thoughts, but our lives are controlled mainly by the subconscious mind. Our conscious mind controls our thoughts and actions only five per cent of the time, while the subconscious exercises control over the remaining 95 per cent. The subconscious is millions of times more powerful than the conscious mind. Therefore, no change in thinking is possible, if it is ignored. The subconscious records experiences from our pre-natal moments, and starts internalising beliefs even before we are out of the womb. Rob Williams says, “By the time you are 12 years old, you are quite asleep at the wheel of your own life, because you are ‘indoctrinated’ by whatever your culture and your parents say is true and right. That is not all bad, but if you want to change those beliefs that are not serving you in positive ways, you need to re-programme the subconscious.”
The problem with trying to re-programme the subconscious is that we fail to realise it is mindlessly playing behavioural ‘tapes.’ To help us understand why conscious awareness does not readily change subconscious programmes, Bruce Lipton provides an instructive analogy when he says, “I provide you with a cassette tape, and you put it into your player and push the play button. As the tape plays the programme, you realise that you do not like it. So, you yell at the tape player to change the programme. After a while of not getting a response, you yell louder and get angrier at the tape player because of the lack of a response. Then when it seems hopeless, you beseech God to help you change the programme. The point is simple, no matter how much you yell at the tape player, it will not change the programme. To change a tape, you have to push the record button and then re-record the programme incorporating the desired changes.” In other words, unless we change the basic software of the unconscious on our hard drive, our life cannot change.
PSYCH-K changes the tapes and re-programmes the subconscious with safe, non-invasive, fun-to-learn techniques. It is a self-empowering process that transforms subconscious, self-sabotaging beliefs into life-supporting and success-promoting ones. Rob Williams says that PSYCH-K was inspired by numerous fields of study including Kinesiology, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, accupressure, and Ericksonian hypnotherapy. It operates under the reality that subconscious beliefs determine our attitudes and experiences such as how we are in relationships, and how we react to situations. They also affect our physical health. By changing beliefs at the subconscious level, we are able to transform most undesirable experiences into a joyful, or at the very least, neutral experience.
PSYCH-K changes beliefs at a subconscious level with various protocols called ‘balances.’ These are techniques that are designed to create a balanced harmonious functioning of both hemispheres of the brain, called a ‘whole brain’ state. This state is ideal for reducing or eliminating resistance at the subconscious level, allowing obsolete beliefs to be re-programmed into helpful ones. Included in these techniques is a permission protocol, a way to consult the ‘expert’ within you to find out if a particular change is in your best interest. This protocol makes PSYCH-K one of its kind. Many modalities assume, a remedy of symptoms or conditions is the right thing to do. However, physical or emotional symptoms are often messengers of an internal conflict that needs immediate attention. Therefore, if this message were to be eliminated without addressing the internal conflict, a new one would likely be sent, and it could be expected to be even bigger and stronger. This problem is avoided by using the permission protocol. Through the process of balancing the left and right hemispheres of the brain, PSYCH-K causes most beliefs to change in a matter of minutes.
Communicating with the subconscious
PSYCH-K recognises the fact that the subconscious directs the body’s motor functions and controls muscle movements. It therefore utilises musculature to communicate with the subconscious, and to make sure that the person’s stated goals are safe and appropriate. The results of PSYCH-K are therefore verifiable. In addition, it encourages the body to heal itself. During a recent interview with Jurriaan Kamp, Rob Williams said, “The mind is the doctor. The pharmacy is in your head. With the right instruction by the mind, our bodies produce all kinds of things similar to the drugs made by the pharmaceutical industry.”
Dr Coomi S Vevaina is a teacher of literature in the Mumbai University. A certified Angel therapist, she is holding a
workshop in the coming Mumbai Expo on the same topic. PSYCH-K is also an instrument of spiritual growth. Rob Williams believes, “We all have one purpose, and that is to manifest our full divinity, while we are incarnated in the physical bodies.” This need is the axis mundi of our existence, and must be addressed. Downplaying the possibility of manifestation with the use of PSYCH-K, Rob Williams insists that it is much more than a technique which helps us get money, health, and partner, because deciding what is worth wanting is a lot harder than getting what you want. Our desire to ‘have’ and to ‘hold’ is rooted in the illusion that we are separate from Source, others, and even parts of our own self. Our self-versus-other consciousness needs to be replaced not merely with a self-and-other consciousness, but also lead us to the point when there is no other, but Self. The experience of oneness is the key to happiness, and the techniques of PSYCH-K can lead us closer to this realisation.
Rob Williams feels that the spirituality inherent in PSYCH-K makes it a modality which embraces namaste in every sense. The Indian form of greeting with hands together at the heart chakra indicates just that. The joining of the palms symbolises a transcendence of all dichotomies and differences, and the bow, which accompanies it, says that the divinity in me recognises the divinity in you. In short, namaste, like the vesica pisces symbol in Western culture, and the yin-and-yang sign in Chinese cosmology, connotes oneness.
By combining the ‘science of spirituality’ and the ‘spirituality of science’, PSYCH-K helps us take responsibility for our lives, experience our amazing God-given powers, and create beauty, harmony, and genuine happiness, in our lives.
