Chakras are the energy centers that aid a person to draw in energy from the universal energy fields. Balanced and open chakras lead to a healthy, continuous flow of the energy, or the prana, throughout the body. A person with healthy chakras enjoys physical, mental and emotional health, and abundance and prosperity in all spheres of life. Imbalances or blockages in chakras lead to various ailments and behavioral disorders. By working on opening and balancing our chakras, we can maintain healthy functioning of our bodies.

There are seven major chakras in the human body, and each chakra corresponds to a specific colour, a musical note, a metal, a certain area of the body, a specific sense (smell, sight, etc) an organ (heart, kidney, etc.), and an endocrine gland. Likewise, the chakras respond to specific crystals too. The piezoelectric property of crystals – their ability to acquire electric charge – makes them very suitable for working with chakras as an energy healing modality. Usually, one can correlate crystals to chakras based on their colours.

Crystal work with chakras can be done using any variety of crystals – raw clusters, tumbled stones, beads, pyramids, wands, and various other cut and polished shapes. Crystals can be held in the hands during meditation, or they can be placed on the body, on each chakra. They can be placed below the mattress on one’s bed. They even work fine by placing them on people’s photographs. Beginners can use a simple body layout of just seven crystals.

Clear quartz: crown chakra

Located at the top of the head, at the very centre, the crown chakra, or the sahasrara as it is known in India, is the seat of higher consciousness and cosmic awareness. At a physical level, it is associated with the brain, cerebellum and skull. This chakra is governed by the colour violet or white. A disharmonious crown chakra leads to anxiety, fear, discontentment, depression, lack of faith and purpose in life, and misuse of power with little or no values/ethics. Clear quartz is the crystal commonly used for balancing the crown chakra. It is a stone of power. It raises consciousness towards enlightenment and purifies on all levels. This ‘master healer’ also enhances memory and concentration.

Amethyst: third-eye chakra

Located in the centre of the brow, the third-eye chakra or ajna chakra is the seat of intuition and psychic abilities. At a physical level, it is associated with the face, eyes, nose, sinus, and the pituitary gland. This chakra is governed by the colour indigo. A disharmonious third-eye chakra leads to lack of imagination or living in a fantasy world, unhealthy attachments, manipulation, impatience, cynicism, sinus problems and nerve disorders. Amethyst is the most popularly used crystal for balancing and harmonising the third-eye chakra. It opens intuition, enhances one’s psychic gifts and brings about a higher state of consciousness.

Blue lace agate: throat chakra

Located in the hollow part between the two clavicle bones, the throat chakra or the visuddha chakra is the seat of our creative self-expression and desire for honest communication. At a physical level, it is associated with the thyroid gland, lungs, vocal cords, mouth, neck,

shoulders, arms, hands, and the respiratory system. This chakra is governed by the colour blue. A disharmonious throat chakra leads to shyness, dishonesty, inability to express/communicate, fear of judgment or rejection, insensitivity and stammering. Blue lace agate is a wonderful crystal for activating and healing the throat chakra. It enhances verbal communication and expression, promotes clarity, aids in public speaking and dissolves writers’ blocks.

Rose quartz for heart chakra

Located at the centre of the chest, the heart, or the anahata chakra, is the seat of unconditional love, dealing with one’s ability to give and receive love freely. At a physical level, it is associated with the heart, lower lungs, thymus, skin, upper back, abdominal cavity, and the circulatory system. This chakra is governed by the colour pink or green. A disharmonious heart chakra leads to lack of compassion, mistrust, indifference, unhealthy boundaries in relationships, and physical ailments, such as heart problems, respiratory diseases, or abnormal blood pressure levels. Rose quartz is the most popular crystal used for working with the heart chakra. It promotes unconditional love for self and others, eases guilt, fosters forgiveness, adds loving energy, trust and commitment to relationships, heals broken hearts and attracts new love.

Citrine: solar plexus chakra

Located just below the sternum, in the stomach area, the solar plexus or the manipura chakra, is the seat of the will, responsible for one’s flexibility, expressiveness, and openness. At a physical level, it is associated with the pancreas, liver, stomach, gall bladder, and the nervous system. This chakra is governed by the colour yellow. A disharmonious solar plexus chakra leads to judgmental and demanding behavior, temper tantrums, loss of will power, ulcers, diabetes, and liver disorders. Citrine is one of the most widely used crystals for balancing the solar plexus chakra. It manifests abundance, attracts wealth, energises, cleanses and protects. It also promotes will power and self-discipline.

Carnelian: sacral chakra

Located in the lower abdomen, just below the navel, the sacral or the swadhisthana chakra is the seat of all creation and desire. At a physical level, it is associated with the reproductive organs, bladder, adrenal glands, and the muscular system. This chakra is governed by the colour orange. A disharmonious sacral chakra leads to relationship issues, a need to dominate others, inability to nurture/care, or a tendency to attract needy people. Physical issues such as infertility, prostate disorders, urinary tract and vaginal infections can arise. Carnelian is a powerful sacral chakra crystal that promotes personal power, energy and courage. It helps calm one’s anger and increases creativity. It helps one remain focussed in the now, and also increases concentration, precision, and analytical capabilities.

Smokey quartz: root chakra

Located at the bottom of the spine, the root or mooladhara chakra is the seat of survival, the home of the sleeping kundalini. At a physical level, it is associated with the feet, legs, hips, spinal column, blood, gonads, and the excretory system. This chakra is governed by the colour red. A disharmonious root chakra leads to insecurity, aggression, selfishness, lethargy, confusion, paranoia, and even suicidal tendencies. Smokey quartz, even though not red in colour, is a widely used sacral chakra healing crystal. It grounds negative energy, assists with pain relief (related to the ‘healing crisis’ process) and helps channel energy to the lower chakras. It promotes patience and non-aggressive assertiveness.

These crystals may be left on the body, on the corresponding chakras, for a minute or two, or even up to 30 minutes. When the chakras have taken the maximum energy required, the stones can fall off the body, or the person receiving the treatment may simply feel complete and refreshed. Any kind of energy therapy, including crystals, is usually followed by a short-lived ‘healing crisis’ process, when the recipient may feel a bit of pain, detoxification, or some emotional release. Regular use of crystals with the chakras results in several positive changes in the specific areas governed by the chakras.
