March 2015 By Gopa Roy Use astrology to grow from every situation, adverse or otherwise, instead of looking for easy solutions, advises Gopa Roy People consult astrologers to find auspicious timings for celebrating various occasions like weddings and births, starting new ventures, moving into a new house, and so on. When matters don’t progress properly people run to astrologers in the hope that they can provide some remedy. Maybe some malefic planet, they believe, is causing problems in getting married, getting a job, winning a legal case, in business, property matters, or in studies, and they hope that conducting some puja or wearing some gemstone might help to alleviate the situation. And of course astrologers oblige their clients and pander to their expectations! It is hardly surprising then that astrology nowadays has come to be associated mostly with predictions and is used for superficial purposes. It was only when I was guided to explore its spiritual and psychological aspects that I began to understand the deeper and subtler ways in which astrology can be used. The language of astrology is symbolic. The planets and houses represent certain types of energies. Physical planets and stars are simply used as symbols for various types of energies in the same way that letters of the alphabet symbolically represent certain sounds and combine in various ways to form words with new sounds and meaning. When different planetary energies combine they too create new energies with new meaning and influence in our lives. Astrology can offer us a powerful tool for soul growth when these energies are interpreted from a spiritual perspective. The soul’s journey The birth chart of a person marks the planetary positions at the moment when a soul takes birth in a new body. But it is much more than just a computed chart for it also tells a story – the story of the soul it represents. For those who can read it spiritually, it speaks of the soul’s karma, what the soul has come to achieve in this lifetime, and the lessons it has come to learn. It indicates the fears, hopes, desires, illusions and self-deceptions of the soul. It also tells how difficult or easy the path of learning will be based on the karma that has been created. For instance, an easy aspect among planets reveals what support you are likely to get in this lifetime because it represents a lesson you have already learnt in the past, while a difficult aspect indicates lessons you are yet to master. The birth chart reveals the strengths you can draw on to assist you in your learning journey in this life. Empowering ourselves Take the hypothetical situation that you didn’t get the job you desired even though you thought you deserved it. You went to an astrologer and found out that it was a weak Saturn in the career house which was responsible for your career-related troubles. However, the moment you blame Saturn for your problems, you become powerless and lacking in will because you no longer have power over your career. You have given it away to Saturn. Spiritual astrology empowers you by giving your free will back to you. Yes, Saturn is in the career sector of your chart. That can’t be disputed. But instead of thinking that there is nothing you can do and relying on some external magical fix to be created for you to mitigate the negative effects of the planet, you have to create the magic yourself by doing the inner work necessary for growth. The energies and qualities associated with Saturn shows you what kind of lessons you need to learn in this area of your life, namely career. Maybe you need to learn how to be disciplined, patient, hard working and responsible with respect to career. By harbouring subconscious fears in this area or due to innate pessimism, you may very well be attracting problems by manifesting what you fear. Instead of passing the buck to Saturn, if you realise that your fears are responsible for your problems, you can consciously choose to learn and express the positive qualities of the planet in this area of your life. The birth chart is available to show you where you have shortcomings and guide you to overcome them. Thus, the same story can be interpreted differently when we view things from a different perspective. By reading the horoscope chart spiritually we can gain this empowering view and take responsibility for our lives. All fortune is good fortune Whether astrological predictions actually materialise or not, when astrologers make adverse predictions it creates fear. However, the very hurdles and obstacles that we view as ill fortune represent opportunities for spiritual growth and advancement. By seeking external remedies what we look for are ways to escape problems. This is because we look at the horoscope from a limited and fearful material perspective rather than from a broader, soul perspective. For example, say you are facing a relationship issue and your astrologer advised you some remedies to avoid relationship conflicts. Perhaps, after following the remedy there is less conflict in your life. But has your problem really been resolved? From the limited, material perspective it appears to have been, but perhaps not from the soul growth perspective. Maybe you need to learn to be assertive in relationships, and the conflict situations were opportunities to learn the lesson. By trying to avoid conflict the opportunity to grow is also lost. Running away from problems will not make problems run away. If we do not complete our lessons in this lifetime we will have to complete the pending soul lessons at some other time. Spiritual astrological readings can help us understand the nature of lessons that problems and obstacles present to us, and encourage us to welcome these as growth opportunities instead of fearing them. We cannot change the position of the stars in the sky but how we choose to express their energies is up to us. Two souls incarnating at the same time and place will have similar birth charts but their lives may be very different because of how they choose to express the available energetic influences and their level of soul growth. What we can do is use the planetary energies in the best way we can by striving to express their positive aspects instead of fearing their negative ones. We can allow fear to rule our lives and try to escape facing what we came to confront or consciously choose to examine ourselves and learn our lessons. Using astrology spiritually can show us the way to live with more awareness, courage, choice and power. The onus of doing our inner work and achieving soul growth is on us. If we allow the stars to guide us they will give us what we need to grow. About the author: Gopa Roy is a former software professional and freelance writer.
