The purpose of our life
We are here to realise our potential, which is enlightenment, says Shivi Verma
A few days ago, a reader in the Life Positive WhatsApp group asked the reason why humans are born. He wanted to know if our existence was by accident or choice. Most people said that we need to expiate our karma accumulated over lifetimes by righteous living in the human body to merge back with God. This was the purpose of human life.
To this, the questioner asked, “Karma started when we appeared on earth or for the first time. I want to know what happened before that which made us separate from God and take up the physical form. Did we ask some power to create us? I don't remember that it was my choice.”
I chipped in with my two cents and said, “Well, I think that the Divine wanted to experience itself; therefore, it took a physical birth in our form. The experience happens only when the opposite polarity exists. Like light and dark, good and bad, forgetfulness and remembrance. So, it forgot its origin in human birth. Then it takes a lot of effort to know and experience its own magnificence in the human body.”
This made a lot of sense to the seeker. I recommended the book Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch, which explains this reality in a very comprehensive way.
However, this conversation took me back to the time when I had had my own insight about the phenomena of why we take birth on earth.
In 2009, it was dawning on me that the purpose of Creation was not negative in nature, like the balancing of karma. It was positive and life-affirming. We, as unborn divine particles, were at peace, comfort, and bliss in the embrace of the Divine before we decided to separate. However, we were also raw, and inexperienced, just like we are in our parent’s home in our human incarnation. Safe, happy, and pampered. However, as we begin growing up, we are no longer content with being safe and provided for. We want to test our strengths and abilities. We want to go out and experience the outer world. We ache for freedom to make our choices and see what we can create out of them.
The same is with souls residing happily in the divine embrace. They want to expand and grow through experience. They wish to discover themselves and see what they are capable of with little interference from the divine parent.
The conditions on earth are suitable for this kind of existence. We are mostly clueless about our divine origin, (which is also the cause of karma later on). We come here not only to experience life and learn lessons, but also to give wings to our imagination. Matter exists in its raw form on earth. It’s human ingenuity and creativity which converts raw matter into buildings, roads, turbines, electronics and communication devices, automobiles, machines, civilisations, and industries. We give expression to our passion through singing, acting, composing music, playing instruments, dancing, writing poetry, learning and performing arts, crafts, creating movies and literature, learning governance, languages, and hard and soft skills, mastering the art of growing and cooking food, making clothes, doing business, excelling at sports, and what not. We fall and get up again. We fail and learn important lessons about ourselves. We make friends, families, and societies. And when we return home, we come to the divine parent with a lot of feathers in our caps. We have gifts to offer to our proud divine parent. We return having reached our complete potential. All these things may take several lifetimes to master.
Spirituality exists to remind children that this world is not their real home and to not get too attached to their creations as they are temporary in nature. We return after we have come full circle, and enlightenment is one of the last important lessons we have to go through. Does it make sense? It does a lot to me.
