A humbling experience
Shivi Verma hopefully looks forward to a new and spirited India, arising from the ashes of the pandemic, much like the mythical phoenix
The months of April and May have been unprecedented in the collective memory of Indians.
Plenty of facades about our power, invincibility, and intellectual supremacy came crumbling down as destiny dealt a very humbling blow to our self-created image of greatness and grandeur. Both nationally and internationally, our image suffered, and it was painful to watch that our much-revered leaders had feet of clay and could make mistakes of monstrous proportions.
It is a difficult time for Indians. Faith is a huge power, and when you have it in someone whom you consider your saviour, it becomes difficult to find an equivalent anchor if that saviour stumbles and falls. As a result, your self-esteem and self-assurance take a hit.
I believe that nature never falters. It likes wholesomeness, completeness, balance, and a sublime perfection in everything it does. It likes depth as much as heights and does not suffer something which is lacking in either of these two aspects for long. Which explains why many of the brightly shining stars of our human galaxy often gather dust after dazzling us for a brief period.
The coronavirus has loosened its hold somewhat after being on a killing spree for almost two months. Lives were lost on a massive scale, grief became the predominant emotion, and despair and hopelessness, our constant companions.
I feel that the pandemic has given us all a breather. We were going at breakneck speed, deluded about our superiority, competence, and righteousness, unwilling to learn the lessons of humility, gratefulness, and the interconnectedness of life. In the headiness of registering one win after another, we were ignoring other vital components of our well-being. Our initial success over the virus had made us presumptuous and delusional. Seen in this context, the pause after the killer second wave has a purpose. It is meant to give us the time to reflect, understand, and absorb the true meaning of human life.
Lives have been changed unalterably, and after the grieving and questioning have subsided, a time will come when we will take a deep, honest look at ourselves. We will walk the corridors of our memory and discover the unattended parts of ourselves. Our leaders too are not exempt from this process. They too would have to honestly introspect and see where they got carried away. Did they start believing in their own myth and go astray from the path of service and duty towards the country? For, otherwise, a tragedy of this scale would not have occurred.
Blaming, cursing, and crying can give us temporary consolation but, in the end, we would have to turn to God and our innermost self in order to find healing, solace, and guidance. Today, we might be angry with Him for unleashing Nature’s fury upon us (in the form of a disease), but tomorrow, as humility makes its way into our hearts, we will understand the message delivered by this calamity. This is just a phase, but our future depends upon our willingness to embrace the teaching and emerge to create a new and better world, unfettered by our ego, self-centeredness, and greed.
